Ok granted I'm not the target demographic, I'm just a myopic middle aged dude, and I haven't sprung for a 60" plasma yet but, the numbers on the front of the Rocket's new jerseys do not read on the wide half court camera shot on TV. They are too small; the front numbers should probably be about the size the back numbers are now. My main problem seems to be when the Rocs are running the break you can't tell who is where. Now, I can always identify Yao Ming, even without a number, but in the wide shot his 11 looks like an ". By the way, I really like the design on the side of the red shorts. I don't know if it's a Rocket nosecone or a pressure wave coming off a rocket, but it conveys speed and graphically ties with the team name. OK troops let the BS begin..
Aren't you supposed to be getting ready for the game tonight, Gene-O? You might be right. I have a big screen, and will test your theory tonight. Now, does this apply to home uniforms, or away uniforms only?
Maybe I need a bigger TV or get better glasses (or both), but I also have a hard time reading the numbers when it zooms out. I don't know all the Rockets well enough to just quickly glance at them and immediately recognize the player. (I know, I'm ashamed of myself, a true Rockets fan would recognize a player immediately from thier silhouette a mile away ) If the numbers were a bit bigger it would help out a lot. This is just ticky tacky stuff, I'm real happy with the uniforms otherwise. (the away ones at least )
I can instantly recognize the players, but I must admit that I confused Taylor with Jackson a few times last night.
I feel the same way the numbers are just a bit tiny and the font doesn't help much. One other aspect that makes it hard is that the numbers on the front especially are so high up close to the word Rockets that it just looks cluttered. Overall they are nice but i guess they can make minor changes next year to make it better if they wanted to. As long as the alternate jersey that might come out next year isn't like the Dallas Aluminum foil jerseys.
I noticed the same thing, Gene. I thought maybe it was just me (I'm not as young as I used to be either ), but apparently not. It's a bit irritating. Didn't this stuff get checked out before they approved them?? One would think so. The numbers can be hard to read. Check that... the numbers are hard to read.
FYI: The NBA code of Rules and Regulations (http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_h.html?nav=ArticleList) says nothing about numbers on uniforms. This should be regulated.
I really like the uniforms, but I agree, the ROCKETS text and NUMBER text on the front of the uniforms could be a bit bigger. Another problem is the FONT used for our numbers is rather thin to begin with so the numbers look smaller. Perhaps a stroke or drop shadow added to the numbers would accent them better to make them bigger and easier to read from a glance.
I agree, the numbers and letters could be a tad bigger. Not to mention how big most of our players are, they kinda swallow the fonts themselves. After going to the first regular season game you really get a true appreciation for Yao's height. Jim Jackson is a wide dude. Braggs is dieseled up too. In person it is totally different from TV.
I remember the days when if you mentioned the word uniform in a thread title, it was locked within seconds. I love the new uni's, especially the road ones. The red is back, and it looks real sharp. From far away, they look like the championship uni's.
The unis are cool, just fairly unimaginative. Red and Black are basically "go to" cool colors for any 5 year old with a box of crayons. They are also the Bulls colors, which became oh so clear to me last night. On the other hand, they do look nice, and we all saw what happened last time the Rox put imagination into a uni change. I might just be a myopic 27 yr old (ahem), but it does sort of hurt as a life long fan that it feels like the Rox have no tradition when it coms to their colors. That is really just too bad.
Every time ESPN shows a Rocket's highlight, they always call them the Chinese National Team, they look 100% better then the PJs. Damn those ESPN desk jockeys, they all think that they are freagin' comedians.
Thanks for the support guys, it's not just me! By the way I sit 14' away from a 2003, 32" Trinitron so I'm not talking about a 13" B&W down at the end of the cell block. Really, I'd like this thread to stay close to the font size topic so Tim knows this is an oversight that probably needs to be addressed. So...... I won't say anything about the grey arm trim looking dingy next to the white numbers.
Man I feel the Rockets do have a traditional color...Red. Red was the color when Moses took us too the championship. Red was the color when Ralph hit the last second shot against the Lakers in 86 to propel us to our second WCF title. Red was the color when we had the Twin Towers. Red was the color when Moses and Dream won 4 diferent League MVP's. Red was the color for such Hall of Famers as Rudy T, Moses Malone, Elvin Hayes, Calvin Murphy, Ralph Sampson, Hakeem Olajuwan and Clyde Drexler. Red was the color when the Rockets finally brought not one but two world championships to Houston. Red is once again the color for the Rockets and the tradition continues for Yao Ming and Steve Francis. Rockets Red has tons of tradition.
Damn, we should've gone with the fuschia and sky blue when we had a chance. I'm not sure how to interpret this post. The Rockets color, as defined by fans? Red. We did our homework there. You want tradition, or you want colors you can't find in the crayon box? On the letter and number size -- we've heard you. Not sure I agree yet, but we've heard you. I'd like to hear people's opinions later in the year, after they've had more time with them -- the number size is actually the same as last year, by the way, and they do match the specs in the league's operations manual. (There are regulations for numbers there, by the way ... whoever mentioned that there weren't just missed them the first time through.) Tim
The numbers do look a little "tiny". Might want to make them a little BIGGER! If we meet the "specs" then other teams are over "spec." Example:
SportsCenter just said: "Rockets playing in the Chinese National Team Uniform." I don't think they resembled the Chinese NT uniform that much, but thats 2 comments about it outside of CC.net (or CF.net). Oh well, as long as we win.
The numbers are too small and the type is irregular. As a Rockets fan, it is not hard to follow who has the ball at any time. However, even though I know what number Steve Francis wears, most of the time I cannot tell if he is wearing a '3' or the symbol for Prince. Make bigger numbers and a type that is somewhat more orthodox. I don't think a number change will change the jerseys appearance at all, but just make them more effective.
Tim will definitely not be happy about this. I remember how he refuted any comparisons when there was an uproar at the first release of the uni's. There's something there, whether the Rockets intended it or not. I feel bad for that guy who was booted from this site for commenting on how the new jerseys and logo looked Chinese. I am not sure how exact his comparisons were, but now he has SportsCenter on his side. Not a bad alibi.
