I know this article is from Sohu. Personally, I don't really like Sohu, but this seems different. Not sure how real this article is. But it seems fair . Some guys please put a full translation. My English ...uhhhhhh

    http://sports.sohu.com/22/89/news215198922.shtml

Yao said "I feel that I am working really hard during training and games, really really hard. But they are still not satisfied. They think , mentally, I did not meet their requirement. This is related to culture...I am mentioning culture again. " Yao sigh , and continue " This change is compelled, but I have to change. It would be great if I manage to change it. If not......" Yao didn't finish his own statement.

i don't know where you are coming from CJ, but I certainly think it's interesting if someone would translate. Hey, if it doesn't sound real, let the reader decide. How your comment helps matters is beyond me.

    Really.

These foriegn articles are really going to make Chinese fans overseas hate the Rocket coaches and players. Watch Francis get booed when the Rockets play their first games in China next season.

Also, you would think Yao Ming would be unhappy about these articles getting published because it makes him sound like a whinny b****.

You know Yao's just making excuses for himself again. ;)

But he should be fine into the season. Just be patient.

The source of this so-called "article" has as much credibility as the National Enquirer

Yao's basically saying every one's telling him he needs to be meaner and more aggressive, but he doesn't think he can do it because of his cultural background. But he says it's something he must do no matter how hard it is.

My advice is get Yao to watch some Jet Li Once upon a Time in China movies, always seems to fire me up :D

If that's really what Yao said, then he doesn't get it, and it is very disappointing to say the least.

Don't blame "culture". Chinese sportsmen/women are as tough and as mean as any other athletes in the world. That's why they won so many gold medals in the Olympics. There are other occasions when you can show your humility, but not during a match.

Chinese "culture" doesn't require Yao to be humble when facing the freaking opponent. If anything at all, Yao is just having a misconception about his own culture.

Humility is BANNED when you are in a war or in a basketball court, don't Yao ever understand!?

"I am working really hard during training and games, really really hard" Yao said? That's rubbish. They're two different things, working hard and being TOUGH. You can sprint up and down the court everytime. That's working hard, not tough. Being tough is when you man-up against your opponent and dominates him and knocks him over (without fouling of course).

I think most of us here would prefer a lazy-but-tough-Yao more than a hardworking-but-soft-Yao, agree?

We need to send to him to a hypnotist to brainwash him into thinking every opponent we face in the NBA is from Korea. Then he'll play angry and mean like we know he can, and saw this summer.

Yeah. I really wanted to say a 80%-hardworking-but-tough-Yao versus a 100%-hardworking-but-soft-Yao. I'd take the former one.

I think this article is really good. Excellent use of first-hand material and quotes. Let's us see a human side of Yao we rarely see in U.S. reporting. Enjoy!

Yao admits to being soft, Van Gundy doesn't need a gentle giant
    11/5/2003 The Morning News

In the locker room, a sweat-drenched Yao collapsed without even wiping off his brow. He grabs a sandwich from the table and starts wolfing it down, all the while joking to Van Gundy, "Hey coach, come have some!"

Van Gundy replies "Sure!" and puts some spread on his own toast.

"Yao needs to be a man! In the game, he gives the impression that he lacks aggressiveness and pressure. In other words, he cannot dominate a game like Oneal or Ewing. I wish he can be mean, meaner, and meaner still!" Van Gundy says so, Ewing says so, the American media says so, even Cato says so.

"I admit, I admit I'm not mean enough", Yao says as he ferociously chomps at his sandwich. "I think this has something to do with environment. For a person like myself, living in China was like living in a greenhouse. Once I get here, everything changes".

He feels a bit hurt. "I feel that I've really worked hard both in practice and during games, really worked very hard. But they just aren't satisfied. They fell that I still haven't mentally/spiritually met their demands. This has something to do with culture -- there I go again with culture!" Yao sighed, like an old geezer, and continued "This sort of change is compelled, but I've got to do it. If I only I can change, then everything is fine. But if I can't..." Yao didn't go on after that. It looks like the pain of change is going to continue for quite some time.

in retrospect, i think Van Gundy probably said that "Yao lacks aggresiveness and INTENSITY"...

what we get for translating a translation. :p

until he become Yao Mean..... Rockets will not win a championship for sure.... we need him to be mean....

I really dun understand what this have to do with culture.... hell, I am a chinese as well but on the court, I play like nobody business.... not to the extent of injuring others, but I do play mean.... with my small built, ppl a head taller than me have problem scoring against me as I really fight position and stuff with them...... this definitely got nothing to do with the chinese culture!!!

Come on Yao!! I know u can do it!!! dun put that body and skill of yours to waste!!! make us proud!!!
