As much as it pains me to say, It looks as if the man who's name was destined for p*rn will be starting week 1: Tom Savage. It's definitely the least sexy option, but he's cheap and there won't be any learning curve. Perhaps not having to give a new QB a crash course of the offense during the season will allow BOB to focus on putting our young promising players in better positions to succeed. I feel as if he's good enough to not lose us games (Brock cough cough) while he also hasn't shown the ability to go out and win games in those late game situations where the defense knows we will be throwing. One thing that I believe will be key to his success is establishing a more dominant run game (SURPRISE). We had a good run game on paper last year, but we ran Lamar into the ground. If another Rb could emerge to take the load off of Lamar, similar to the Foster Tate 1-2 punch, we can win 10 games with Tom Savage.
Embarrassing for who? The Texans? Man...please... Cowboys could have let that dude go, chose not to attempting to get something for their dead weight...NO TEAM was falling for that bs, Romo decides to retire...the end. Not the Texans fault that played out the way it did... Now what WOULD HAVE BEEN EMBARRASSING would have been them giving up a draft pick to attain Romo, sign him and he gets hurt in the first preseason game. Luckily, that didn't happen and the Texans can now move on... Dude had good numbers, but he was HELLA overrated anyway....good luck on TV.
TR: Many reasons I felt this was the right decision. Nothing to do with the Texans, everything with CBS. Right decision at this time. (Mentions what he wants to do the next 20-30 years) (What should Houston do now at QB?) Would love to pretend I'm the GM for the Texans but I'm not. Houston was at the top of the list of teams I looked at.
Yeah; there's absolutely nothing embarrassing about the way the Texans handled this. Him hitting the free agent market and signing with Cleveland over Houston would've been embarrassing. An oft-injured, 37-year old choosing a cush, rarely-available network job that likely pays north of seven figures over continuing to play football isn't much to get upset about. I think the vast majority of us would choose the same path.
It's embarrassing they gave up a 2nd rounder for no good reason, other than perhaps the coach being insecure. But O'Brien was threatening to leave during the playoffs last year, so he's probably gone before the damage sets in.
OBrien out after this year, they reboot again needing a quarterback with a lot of cap space and no 2nd round pick. Could go either way on whether it ends up working out. I'm bearish on them for the first time in awhile really. I see regression on defense and a total question mark on offense. Hopefully I'm wrong!
There will be a lot of spin (already happening from either Pat or Texanscap) from the camps that ALWAYS think the Texans made the right move, but it's almost a lock that they got burned here. It seems like the were convinced they were going to get Romo. He wanted to be here, they thought they'd get him and they moved this offseason as if that would happen. He asked Jerry NOT to release him while he figured out the CBS opportunity. Texans got burned. It's not embarrassing because it isn't their fault, but I'm willing to guess that if they could restart this off season knowing they wouldn't end up with Romo they'd do things differently. We are now likely look at a totally different direction. A young QB that we are developing situation.
Damn hearing that he basically *would* have come here is killing me. I'm starting to think that if we had traded for him the moment he was available, this broadcasting stuff wouldn't have had time to germinate. Dammit. What a weird, unfortunate series of events.
Yeah, I agree. Not a good off season so far. They need to replace so many departing players! Rick Smith needs to have his best ever draft or they could be hurting in a big way next year, and I don't have a lot of faith in Rick Smith...
Adam Schefter: (On the story coming out yesterday Jerry allowed teams to contact/visit Romo) Strange story & didn't understand it. Boat had left the dock already. He was going into broadcasting. One real team interested: Houston. Places he would've gone & teams interested, one potential landing spot & that was Houston. There would've been mutual interest but this was an opportunity too good to pass up, too rare to come along. Had he pursued football, both sides would've been interested. If he was playing this year, he'd be playing QB for the Texans this year. It's not that Houston didn't want to take the risk. Tony made the decision. He made the decision before they made theirs. None of them were counting on Romo. 1) availability(football or TV) 2) counting on him from a health standpoint If they did sign him, they didn't know if he would stay healthy. Texans were preparing to go forward without him & it would've been a bonus with him but couldn't count on him because of his injury history. ________________________ Tony Romo: 'I understand that I can still play the game of football.' Tony Romo on the Texans: 'There was absolutely interest. I don't want to get into great detail.' Romo: "I want to say a big thank you. Jerry (Jones) was amazing. I know it didn't look that way from the outside. He was in my corner." Romo did say there were a few moments of disagreement with the Cowboys along the way. But overall, called Jerry Jones the "best boss. Tony Romo said he was aware if he met with teams he would want to remain playing and feel competitive. Tony Romo: "Health-wise, I'm probably healthier than I've been in three or four years. ... That wasn't hanging over my head." Tony Romo said he studied teams he'd like to play for. Texans were at the top of the list Tony Romo on Texans; 'Their head coach is very good. He keeps them playing hard, very disciplined football team.' Tony Romo on Texans: 'They have some incredibly gifted football players, one of the reasons that made it a tough decision.' Tony Romo: 'Their situation is they're going to try to find someone. They like [Tom] savage and like Brandon [Weeden].' Tony Romo on Texans: 'I think they have a chance to be very successful. They’re very talented.' Tony Romo on potential return to playing in NFL: "You never say never. I'll just say it's about 99 percent (that I'm not returning)." Tony Romo on battling with the idea of playing for another franchise: "That was definitely part of [my decision]. I'm a Dallas Cowboy." Tony Romo couldn't envision himself playing for another team. "I'm a Dallas Cowboy," he said Tony Romo: "It meant something to me to be a Dallas Cowboy. The fans have been great. That's something I will never forget."
Not blaming the Texans here. They didn't give up pick to trade for him and by all accounts it we would have him if he didn't make the decision he did. Romo wanted to go into broadcasting more than playing football. End of story. Now, what to do with our 30 million in cap space? Might as well just save it for next year IMO. Edit: Scratch that, we should use some of that money to give extensions to our current players (Hopkins, Clowney, etc...).
hey bro, your Jacket is too big and you might want to invest in some collar stays! doesn't surprise me from a backward hat wearing mofo'. good riddance. Seriously, what a weird situation. Romo seems to be implying the Texans weren't showing interest then says the Texans were at top of his "list". Then says playing for another organization was part of it. That he's a cowboy? Ju kiddin' me mayne? You'd want to make the team that replaced you eat crow. Favre, peyton even bledsoe went to the bills and made a pro bowl. In the big moments, he always turns it over. =/ I really wanted to keep bouye and simon.
Maybe they can trade O'Brien for a second round pick... I could see the defense taking a step back but I could also see the offense taking 2 steps forward. Savage should have a better season than Brock. There were 5 or 6 new starters on offense last year...a little continuity this year could go a long way.
