If anyone on here is a vet, I would love to hear your opinion on this... On Friday morning I dropped my 2 year old beagle "Sampson" off at our vet's office to be neutered. I picked him up that afternoon, and they said everything went well and to just keep an eye on him. Well at around 8:00 that night, I noticed he was bleeding. It progressively got a little worse, to the point it was running down his legs, and onto the carpet. I called the emergency number, and they said to bring him into the all-night clinic. To make a long story short, the doctor's at the clinic decided that opening him back up was the best idea, to find out the problem. After putting him through surgery for the 2nd time in 8 hours, they found that he was bleeding internally. They had make an incision into his abdomen and found his testicular artery was bleeding on the right side. This set us back $800, which sucks cause we are broke, but at least my dog is ok now. When I took him to my normal vet for a follow up today, the doctor acted like they had done more than was necessary at the clinic. He said all he thinks Sampson needed was a pressure bandage. I don't know if this doctor is just trying to cover his own ass because he screwed up, or if the clinic was trying to get as much money as possible. What do you think??
My experience goes no further than dog ownership, but it sounds to me like your vet is trying to cover his ass. I just get the feeling applying pressure to internal bleeding ain't gonna work.
That's no good, but at least your dog is OK. That's the important thing. Mine isn't horrible, just a little embarrassing. I took my cat to the vet to have his ding-a-ling chopped off (that's a technical term) and about an hour later, I get a call from the vet. They said they couldn't do it because my cat was actually a female! I could hear them laughing in the background. Luckily, Weezer is a unisex name. I swear, all that time I thought it was a nut sack. Turns out it was just an area of different colored fur...
Ima- Very funny! Harrisment- Sounds like to me your vet was covering up his mistake. Neither my dog or parents dogs ever had bleeding after they were fixed so that tells me something was wrong.
emergency vets are always expensive, ALWAYS. you're vet messed up by not fixing him right the first time (no pun intended)... i would find a new vet.
Yeah, it's really not the money that bothered me. I just don't like the fact that my vet probably screwed up but I'm stuck with this huge bill. I agree with you on finding a new vet...once I take him back next week to get the stiches removed, that will be the last time we got here.
Being attatched to and owning a pet can be tough. I had a cat for 14 years awhile back that began having breathing problems. To make a long story short, I spent close to $2000 on him only to have to put him to sleep a couple of weeks later because the problems were related to his heart. Had I known I could have had him put to sleep earlier since that was what was going to happen anyway.
I hate it when my testicular artery is leaking. I think you should use one word with your vet - lawyer. Then expect to be helped out with that bill if not fully compensated. If that doesn't work, use another word - Marvin Zindler.
The vet WAS covering his ass. Putting pressure on internal bleeding won't work - it's like putting pressure on a bigass swollen bruise! It doesn't accomplish anything and it hurts like a mofo. Internal bleeding has to be taken care of internally i.e. surgically. You were completely right to take him to the emergency vet, and DEFINITELY find a new vet. If he screws up on something like this, there's no telling what else he'll screw up on and then cover his ass.
Oh come on guys, give the vet a break. I had done his best in the operation. Please don't sue him okay?
That just doesn't seem right. The one vet botched the neuter operation and you had to pay to fix the problems caused by that operation at an all-night clinic. $800 for a neuter operation. WOW. I see why it was all necessary but you took one in the pooper. I would be pissing, ranting, and raving for a week after that.
I assume you'll be paying for that visit as well? If you wanted to make a statement, you'd get a different vet to remove the stitches.
No way I will be paying anything at that visit. I would like to get some compensation out of this, but I just don't know how to approach it. I can't really prove that the original vet screwed up, although it's pretty obvious. Plus I have friends that work at this clinic, so I'm a little hesitant to cause a big fuss. But damn...In total I basically spent $1,000 to get my dog fixed. It just ain't right.
