Gene Elston in running for Frick award
Astros fans given a chance to flex their online muscle

In an unusual and unexpected change in their voting procedures, the Baseball Hall of Fame is allowing fans to vote for the next Ford C. Frick award finalist. For several years, the Houston Astros fan community has been lobbying for the "Voice of the Astros", Gene Elston, to earn this award.

Elston brought major-league baseball for the first time to millions of radio listeners in the southwest, and was an outstanding announcer for his 25 years with the Houston Astros. In fact, it was his professionalism that many feel led to his dismissal.

Anyone who remembers Elston knows that, although he loved the team, he was never an overt "homer" and focused more on broadcasting the game and informing the fans rather than screaming into the microphone or selling products in between pitches. After his dismal in 1986, Elston was replaced by Milo Hamilton.

THIS IS A CHANCE FOR ASTROS FANS TO HELP UNDO A WRONG THAT WAS COMMITTED AFTER THE 1986 SEASON

We are allowed to vote once per day at the Hall of Fame website (linked below). Please consider casting a vote for Gene Elston.

    Thanks, Ray Kerby -- astrosdaily.com

I notice bill worrell and bill brown are also on the list...but I'm guessing don't have a shot?

Never had the chance to hear elston call a game but I've heard enough good things about him that I plan to vote
