I wouldn't argue with that. One of my best friends went to the same Methodist Church in Tarrytown (that's a high dollar central Austin neighborhood) that President Bush went to back when he was governor and met the man. He liked him immediately. My significant other, who recently retired from decades working as an executive in Texas state government, and met President Bush while he was governor, has a great deal of respect for him as governor of Texas, and we have both defended him during conversations with fellow Democrats for his job as governor. I agree that he was a more or less decent man too easily influenced by awful advisors while President. The name "Trump" doesn't deserve to be conflated with the former president.

    Aren't the Bushs Southern Baptists?

Edit: Looked it up, says Methodist. I'm asking because I know a family in Houston who are Southern Baptists and were very close to the Bush family.

Highland Church and Reverend Craig had quite the history with GWB (presided at the National Prayer Service for his inauguration). Would have been quite the honor to have met then Governor at church.

I grew up in a Southern Baptist Church, but now I go to a Methodist one. Not a lot of difference in my opinion.

I was about to respond, ATW, and was glad to see the edit. The Bush's have loads of friends in Texas, naturally, and I don't doubt that many are Baptist. The former president's immediate family, however, apparently like a more "laid back" Christian church, which I think accurately describes the United Methodist Church in the States.

My friend certainly thinks it was, and he was influenced enough to vote for him when he ran for President. Interestingly enough, he later voted for Obama twice.

My church is a United Methodist Church and we are pretty "laid back" compared to Southern Baptists (we often joke about that in sermons... LOL, its all good). Hillary Clinton also belongs to a United Methodist Church (she often talks about her Methodist upbringing and Wesley influence).

Yes, I think calling it the "laid back" mainstream Christian church is fair. I have several relatives who belong, and some were raised as Southern Baptists. :)

I don't know how you guys roll in Europe, but here in America all of the denominations and religions just kind of hang out together.

My brother also voted for Bush 2X and Obama 2X - it's not uncommon. A LOT of Bush supporters voted Obama in 2008 due to McCain's pick of Palin for VP.

Wow, lots of Bush respect in this thread. I too liked the man but thought he did not perform the role of POTUS very well but still infinitely better than his successor.

Yeah if you can pretend that he didn't kill about a million innocent people in the Middle East by lying us into war.

Yeah if you can forget that he was sort of a good uy to have a beer with in a rich frat boy kind of way.

I'm definitely a leftie. Find one post where I called Bush a name - not criticized a policy, called him a name- and I will PayPal you $75 right now.

Ya, Bush only started one more unessesary war that cost over a trillion dollars and resided over the events leading up to the Great Recession. Obama doesn't have those grand feats.
