I'm off to California... Leave Sunday/Monday for two weeks... reporting to the Old Fire, but may get reassigned when I get there. I'll be doing Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation work--stabilization of soils, watershed analysis, identification of future risks (mudslides, floods, etc.), and talking to lots of folks and neighborhood associations about what comes next. I'll try to check in, especially if we reach 7-0 by spanking the Mavs or if something equally momentous happens in the rest of the world. Here's a map of the Old Fire and its neighbors...
Hey that's the fire that almost got my in-laws house!!! They live in Claremont. Or was that the Grand Prix fire?
If an admin is out there, I'd like to suggest that instead of "senior member" rimrocker get something like "Smokey the BBSer." He's earned it.
Yep, stay safe and have some fun if time allows. Sorry you just missed the Oktoberfest in Lake Arrowhead.
Thanks, but the most dangerous thing I'll be doing on this assignment is driving in SoCal. The youngsters on the front line do the dangerous work and they're the ones that deserve our appreciation. Here's me on a bridge at Glacier NP earlier this year... you can see I'm not close to flameage. NW--from the map, it looks like Claremont is closest to the Padua Fire. Not that I would have time to meet up, but is there anyone on the board that lives in that area? I'd be happy to answer questions and forward info to anyone's who's interested.
Stay safe, and good luck. We got a little rain here today in So. Cal. I have no idea if it helps things that much or not, but hopefully it will. It's also strangely cool here now, so bring a jacket.
