The sushi thread reminded me of the article that I read recently:

But enough about whale. By far the most diabolical dish I've heard tale of here in Tokyo has nothing at all to do with whales. It seems that in some restaurants, they will put live baby eels in a large bowl of water with a big block of tofu at the bottom. The bowl is heated, and as they become uncomfortably hot, the baby eels burrow down into the cooler tofu. There they are cooked alive, and served like an olive loaf. Any discussion of evil cuisine begins and ends with this recipe.

I ate some lobster sashimi with the family once. Great presentation, they had a dish of lobster meat lined up with the decapitated head in the middle. The meat was delicious. It was fresh and soaked up the wasabi nicely. The meat was so fresh that the lobster's eyes were still moving.

This reminds me of the old story that they used to eat fresh monkey brains in certain Asian countries. And I mean they had to be fresh. Not that I necessarily believe that one...

Uhhh... no they still do eat fresh monkey brains in India. I went there in 1999 on the island of Goa and did not partake but witnessed some wealthy people order live monkey's brains. They bring the monkey and put his neck in a stocks type of table where only his head sticks out. Then you chip off the top of his skull with a chisel like thing while it is still alive and then eat the brains. I would have said something to stop it had I not been paralyzed in disbelief.

Unbelievable... I didn't know that was actually true.

Here is something I read about, but haven't actually seen. Sugata-Zukuri, which is sashimi served alive:

The main open area of the restaurant has a huge pool stocked with fish. As it turns out, it isn't decorative. That's our lunch swimming around. We are shown to a small private room off the main room. We steel ourself with sake and soon the whole fish is brought in on a large platter. The fish has been fileted live, and the slices laid back in the fish. The fish isn't moving, so Nana pokes it with her chopsticks. It flaps its tail weakly, and she and Mrs. Yamanaka squeal. Now Nana and Mrs. Yamanaka have paid top dollar for this meal, and Nana wants to ensure it's memorable. This fish isn't moving to her satisfaction, so she pours a little sake down it's throat. That gets it going. Nana and Mrs. Yamanaka are the best part of the show, though. Like small girls they get closer and closer to the fish, poking it with chopsticks, and when it finally moves, they jump back and scream.

I've heard that if you are quick it is still moving when you put it in your mouth.

Man that's some crazy stuff, I mean I still like sushi but that's jsut wrong. As far as live fish, as a asian like the fish to be alive just before they cook it, but I definitely want it to be dead when it goes in my mouth. I can't stand eating something that's alive, now that's just wrong.

Anyone see the live Cat restaurant in a special public tv show re. China? No offense to our Chinese friends, I imagine some of the things (slaughterhouses) we do aren't too pleasant either.

Not certain whether I should continue for you cat lovers...

Seen it, pretty cool stuff. One of the true tests of a sushi chef is to filet the fish in such a fashon that you can peel back a layer & see the fish's heart beating.

I watched him do it (was sitting at the counter). It was like a biology lab experiment. A very tasty biology lab experiment.
