I hate to make a really bad pun, but I guess the Timing was just a little too right on that one.

Oh, I stretch memory way back, so far back, all the way back to--our last President. Almost lost in the mists of time though it is, I not only remember eight years of relentless attacks from Clinton-haters

Compared to Clinton, GWB got a serious walk. No special prosecution for his alleged Nation Guard dissertion, illegal drug use, and the other indiscretions in his misspent youth. Also no special prosecution for his time in the big White House. Remember Clinton got investigated for FileGate (tm) and TravelGate (tm). (BTW IMO the special processor investigation of Clinton was completely inappropriate. Likewise for GWB).

The point that I am making is that even though there are many GWB hatas none of the three ring circus that the right wing activists brought during the Clinton presidency is in evidence.

You know, I let myself have a rebirth of youthful optimism when Clinton was elected sorta like back when I was a boy and JFK was elected. But his feet (or other parts) of clay were to easily evident in the age of information and disinformation, so very little of his 'vision' was implemented.

You can imagine how low my expectations were for the Bush "All Hat No Cattle" administration. But, dayum, do these guys not even have a clue about public realtions? 911 aside from everything else, these guys can't even put a positive spin on the good stuff they do. It's like some evil dogs are in the presidents head laughing about the stupid stuff they make him say.

In fairness though, for what will be be the defining event of this generation, I can't imagine a better public performance than given by George W Bush.

    Go figure.
(a liberal will always say you may have a point)

I wonder if history will see this president like a Louis XIII with a bunch of Cardinal Mazarins running around doing all the work. Or maybe even a Louis XIV before he came of age with a bunch of Mazarins running around. We'll have to wait and see if anything close to a Fronde type civil unrest comes about. Clinton could play Henri IV's illegitimate son.

Looking at it like that is the only way I can stand what's happening these days. I still have a romantic view of that part of French history so it helps for me to make comparisons and try romanticize what's going on now.

Well done. However, even the child XIV had the ability and potential to be a strong leader and take over...GWB is not smart enough. He is much more XII and XV with a little XVI stubborness/blindness (since he could have easily avoided the revolution) thrown in.

True, and I realized later that he couldn't be Louis XIII since he actually took the field at the head of the army at La Rochelle. Whereas Bush went AWOL when he was supposed to be serving.

I work in an office that is decidedly conservative.

to put that in perspective the company owner has a gavel from Newt, had a plaque declaring him republican of the year representing NY state signed by the speaker of the house and the head of the republican party. he has met with plenty of senators and such. he is part of that system. he is also not an Idiot. he is very inteligent, and he is currently at a point where is is definately not voting for bush no mater what. in fact all 4 of my bosses are of his political position. these are 4 stallwart conservative republicans that I have heard bash Clinton ad nausium. They have hail Bush a a savior. They were all for the war. they were right on track with the RNP, but now they dont have any interest in his politics.

kind of says something about how these guys are running the country.

Every true conservative I know has told me they will not vote for Bush in 2004. The only people I know who will vote for Bush in 2004 are those who consider themselves more of a Republican than a Conservative.

Who will they vote for instead? The Dem or Ind candidate? IMO when push comes to shove*, most will bite the bullet and vote for Bush. He hasn't even started really campaigning yet.

So is it worse to be a Republican or a Conservative?

I don't think it's a case of "worse". Many of my friends who describe themselves as Conservatives over Republicans do not like some of the things that Bush as done. Those that describe themselves as Republicans over Conservatives love everything Bush as done. It's a question of loyalty to ideology vs. loyalty to political party.
