Thought this deserved its own thread, because Hield is getting bashed around by this trade.

Over the last five drafts, there have only been four rookies* who shot higher than 36% from three, Hield ranks number 2.

    Drafts 2012 - 2016
    38.8% -- Bradley Beal 2012
    36.9% -- Buddy Hield 2016
    36.8% -- Damian Lillard 2012 (ROY)
    36.3% -- Tim Hardaway 2013

Hield % is rising fast, too. Over last 38 games, since end of his 1st month, he's shooting 43%

The 2011 draft had a lot, though

    41.4% -- Klay Thompson
    39.9% -- Kyrie Irving (ROY)
    38.0% -- Brandon Knight
    37.9% -- Isaiah Thomas
    36.1% -- Jimmer Fredette
    Here's the Top 5 rookies from 2011 - 2016 when filtered for > 4 attempts / game

    41.4% -- Klay Thompson 2011
    38.6% -- Bradley Beal 2012
    38.0% -- Brandon Knight 2011
    36.9% -- Buddy Hield 2016
    36.8% -- Damian Lillard 2012

Even if you expand to beyond rookie seasons, and filter for anyone 23 yrs or younger, since 2011, only 22 qualifying players in the NBA have shot better than Hield on >4 attempts/gm. And, his % is rising.

Where Hield would rank each year for players 23 yrs old or less
    4th -- 2010-11
    9th -- 2011-12
    5th -- 2012-13
    5th -- 2013-14
    7th -- 2014-15
    3rd -- 2015-16

    * drafted rookies. I'm not counting journeymen Chris Copeland at age 28, and Brian Roberts at age 27.

So he's soon a better two way player than Harden?

WOW. Kings just stole this deal. Buddy is an elite shooter. Curry like talent.

Stats just prove he's elite with Klay, Beal, and Dame. DOLLA DAME HE"S BETTER THAN!!!

    41.4% -- Klay Thompson 2011
    38.6% -- Bradley Beal 2012
    36.9% -- Buddy Hield 2016
    36.8% -- Damian Lillard 2012

What happened to poor Brandon knight . Regardless , Buddy looks like he's in good company and if he can continue to improve his 3 point percentage and play above average D then he's got a place in the league for 10 years and is on a rookie contract .

I don't think his athletic upside is incredibly high and his physical tools aren't elite ; but NBA strength training shouldn't be underestimated and he might gain a half step .

Shooting is shooting and in this NBA , until the supply goes up , it will cost a premium .

This is a trade that can potentially be big wins for both teams . Although both teams have issues with assets and contracts that may prevent them from maximizing their new players value .

Hield started awful, and thats what people remember. People can form early impressions on players and stick to them, without seeing if there's hot & cold periods, GRADUAL improvement, etc.

Kevin Durant came into league and was actually considered an inefficient overrated chucker his first year (the same kind criticism of Westbrook). He only shot .288 from 3. It wasnt SO clear cut he was better than Greg Oden.

Hield doesnt figure to be that good. But even at his advanced age there is still improvement in front of him. Chandler Parsons came in at 23 and IMPROVED his shooting & scoring every year (on the Rockets, until he got hurt & PAID). Even at Dallas Parsons had some star level play. Wouldnt write off Hield just yet.

He's in a similar situation now as Booker was around the same time last year. Let's see if he can perform up to par with him too. If he does, it won't justify the lopsidedness of the Boogie trade but at least you know you have a piece to build around.

Jimmer is still raining 3s over in China. He can keep that spot warm for Buddy.

Malcolm Brogdon is a rookie & makes 41.7% of his attempts from behind the arc. Either you missed him, or you didn't mention other parameter you were sorting these players out.

My bad, didn't read the other part. Nevermind.

Brogdon doesn't qualify for the NBA leaderboard, so didn't come up on the list of qualifying players. He probably will soon. You have to make 1 per team game....i.e. 82 in a year.

Yeah, pretty much no performance will justify the trade on pure equality of skill. They would need like THE number one pick in the draft. But it doesn't take much to show Morey couldn't beat the offer. And that's the point of presenting the stats. Hield is being unfairly bashed by us and fans of other Teams, seemingly as a way to bash their own GM for not offering a better trade.

Anyhoot, I think the stats are interesting on their own. I didn't realize rookies don't really shoot that well as a whole. I guess partly change in distance, rookie wall and the role playing shooters maybe don't play enough to qualify.

I heard Brewer had Klay Thompson potential too. And KJ is the next Durant. Get us Kosta Morey.

Closer to Troy Daniels than Steph Curry... small college seniors don't come to the NBA to shred anymore.

Maybe Ranadiva confused Seth Curry for Steph Curry...

Curry shot .437 in his rookie season. Hield is far from Curry's level. But Durant shot .288 as a rookie. So maybe Hield will turn out better than Durant.

Poor Hield will be unfairly measured against the Cousins trade...But don't look now, he just passed Beal for #1 rookie in last 5 years for 3s, plus passed Knight and Isaiah T in last 6 yrs

    Since trade
    13.5 ppg
    .500 FG%
.500 3F% on nearly 5 shots per game
    .645 TS%

    Overall
38.7% 3F% highest for a rookie covering last five drafts (OP has a typo for Beal), 3rd last 6 yrs

    Since November's bad NBA start
    44.3% 3F%

And he was put into the starting lineup last night as Tyreke got a DNP

Just how much of a mind**** would it be if Hield became a Steph Curry 2.0 and Vivek would be proven right? LOL

By the way, Toronto's Norman Powell has shot at 40.4% in his rookie year last year after breaking into Raptors rotation. Although only 1.8 attempts per game (14.8mpg), so not much of a volume.
