I would have to say then I think the Rocket should extend. I sure hope that EG is getting serious counseling to get his life straightened out, in case his NBA career ends prematurely.
and thats when a team like denver/utah takes a chance on him, and then we end up losing to them because of one of his 3's
It all depends on the amount they resign him for. EG is still an unproven commodity and if his contract extension is too high of a price tag, then his trade value automatically goes down. Rockets have been down this road before so I hope they plot carefully.
I think it's best to extend him for several reasons: 1. The fact that he's checked himself in for help can be a good thing. The Rockets should use this time to aggressively find out if there really could be a mental health issue involved. If there is, that would explain alot of Eddie's behavior...seemingly not caring, temper, mood swing, thoughts of giving up, etc. 2. If there is a legitimate mental health issue and the Rockets don't extend the contract or aggressively and wholeheartedly support Eddie's diagnosis and treatment plan, then they take a bigger PR hit than they're worried about now(extending a rebel, etc). 3. If they do support him and he is able to manage his problem, however long it takes, they would gain Eddie's gratitude and allegiance. A mental health problem could very well be a big reason he hasn't lived up to his potential. Bottom line...I deal with a relative that suffers with emotional and mental health issues. He struggles mightily with what you and I consider easy everyday issues such as work or school responsibilites and emotional issues as well. Medicine and therapy have been a great help. It's not always a 100 % fix, but the alternative is pure hell for the patient and those around him. What I'm saying is the Rockets can't just cut him loose if he needs legitimate help. He hasn't done anything horrible enough to warrant that IF has a legitimate problem. If not for Eddie's sake, then they should do it for the more selfish reason that it could result in a positive result of a developed Eddie down the road.
How about extending him and if he does not show signs of getting his act together at some point then expose him to the expansion draft. Surely they would take a two year flier on him since he has tons of talent.
and you really want to pin our power forward of the future hopes on a second round draft pick? I am not saying that he will not be very good but there is a reason that Eddie was a lottery pick and Badiane was a second rounder.
If there is a legitimate mental health issue and the Rockets don't extend the contract or aggressively and wholeheartedly support Eddie's diagnosis and treatment plan, then they take a bigger PR hit than they're worried about now I don't the PR hit is much of an issue for Rockets fans. I do think that the league/Rockets should care deeply how this plays out though. The Rockets drafted a teenager who may not be mature enough to handle the NBA life now. Also he now has more $$$ then he could ever imagine, which could lead to a spectacular crash and burn, which in turn could ruin the rest of his life. IMO the league should be very interested in seeing that EG's current episode ends well. The bottom line is that EG needs to get his life together for his sake (with the league/Rockets giving a helping hand).
If extending Eddie ends up being the difference between using the exception or not, then I'm going to be royally p*ssed off. That means we did the whole Rice thing and the 1st round pick to Utah for nothing. When we did the deal, we must have assumed we would extend Eddie. And if we don't use the exception then the whole thing was a salary dump that we paid for with a first round pick and Mr. Man Boobs. There should be absolutely no correlation between whether we re-up Eddie regarding the exception. In my opinion.
DD Ganja smoking Clinically DEPRESSED UNRESTRICTED Free agent. BartmanJones I don't remember specifying any particular kind of drug....dork. I think you are the person who assumed what you assumed
I'd rather stay with Badiane. Griffin hasn't improved a bit in 2 years, how can people expect him to turn it 180 degrees and bebome a stud? He's more likely to become an Isiah Rider. also with extra 3 mil in cap space next year, we might have a good chance to get a decent PF who can play with Yao and Steve better than him.
What does it tell the team, if we extend the contract of a player who has continually left them high and dry? The most we could get for EG right now are #2 picks. It's not worth the potential chemistry blowup for that. I think some of you guys are overestimating the value of EG. If we don't extend his contract, I'm pretty sure we can still re-sign him for cheaper than what he's suppsoed to get. Of course, he might opt to leave since Houston has been bad news for him since he's been here. Either way, I think the Rockets would be sending a horrible PR message (they need as much PR as possible, if ticket sales are any indication) if they extend his contract. Moreover, I don't want EG's contract to prevent us from signing someone else for luxury tax reasons.
The Rockets will extend every resource available and make every public show of support; but they will not extend Eddie because they do not have the margin in the West to be even slightly distracted. This is Van Gundy's first hurdle, and I don't see him letting this become any sort of secondary issue to the Rox on-court mission.
come on now, he was after all a second round pick... do you really think he will be an allstar caliber player like many are making him out to be... id say if he posts eddie griff numbers that will be a strech the first year
Actually, We don't need Malick to be an allstar caliber player, just one who can stand his ground, get rebounds and be an enforcer, and he may very well be that guy. DD
you think its possible for him to do that in his first year here. i seriously dont have as much hype about him as much as some others. but if hes good hay, all the better heres hopin we got another 2nd round steal
I think there is a relationship between using the exception and extend EG's contract. Originally, CD plans to extend EG's contract and make the Rice trade a salary dump (sorry. But Les has a bad rap of being a cheap ass). Now if we don't extend EG's contract, we will be lower than the cap, then we better use that trade exception.
Correction: Make that an unrestricted pot smoking clinically depressed free agent who was suspended by the team that flushed 3 1st round draft picks to get him only to have him walk away from said team during the preseason of his 3rd year. To all teams who would want a player like this the line starts at the left...
