A lot to consider. In reality this coming summer will be the last time we should have cap space in several years. All that matters to me is the cap space this summer. Chandler's final year doesn't bother me because it will be an expiring $13.5m contract, and if we are (as we should be) powerfully contending at that point I'm not sure that we will care about cap space as we will be capped out and he will not impact our ability to re-sign Capela. IMO what matters is this summer, the do-or-die summer for the front office. Brewer will take up $7.6m cap space this summer, Chandler will take $13m. When I look at it that way, Chandler will take up $5.5m more than Brewer this summer. Right not we're looking at just under $9m of cap space in summer 2017 (if we renounce exceptions, Brown, Ennis and terminate KJ contract). In order to sign someone decent I assume we would have to create an additional ~ $7-10m. Essentially, one of Brewer($7.5m)/Ariza($7.5m)/Gordon($12.9m)/Anderson($19.5m) would have to go and I assume that decision would be made based on the position of the player we're acquiring. If we have Chandler (meaning Brewer is gone), Capela, Anderson, Harrell, Dekker locked up - and Chandler WILL certainly cement our existing success - we are most likely looking at an upgrade at the wing, someone better than Ariza or Gordon. Now after acquiring Chandler, we're sitting on a measly $4m-ish of cap space. Given Ariza would be in his final season and possibly retiring after that (remember, Trevor will be 33 when his contract expires and will have played 16 seasons of heavy minutes) isn't it automatic that we would trade Ariza (easily given his current season) creating roughly $12m in total cap space? At present, what Brewer gives us can be had for the minimum. In fact, KJ could have done it and it looks like our insistence on playing Brewer, ostensibly to raise Brewer's value, has alienated KJ (as it would anyone in their job). I think that was a bad decision by the Rockets and a stupid reaction by KJ. In my eyes, we are overpaying Brewer by about $6m. If we assume Chandler's value this season is (conveniently) $6.5m, we would also be overpaying him by $6m. Would you rather overpay Brewer or Chandler? Overpaying Chandler for the same amount is like just outright signing a $6m player on top of what we currently have. Would you do it? We were going to do it for D-Mo and then have to operate over the cap in the summer. Would you take a similar risk with Chandler? To look at it this from another perspective, to get rid of Brewer for nothing in return would cost us a young asset worth somewhere between the 20th and 35th pick of the 2017 draft or an equivalent young prospect. That's what we would have to send to, say, the Sixers in order for them to swallow his contract. I don't like this idea. I would even CONSIDER waiving him than to give something up, given we are performing well with our top 8 rotation guys. What would it cost to acquire Chandler. Well, not much. He's not worth much to the Suns and they are rebuilding heavily, his contract is death to teams that are further than the Rockets from contention, and his age is an issue if you need him to man the middle full time. So if they want to get rid of Chandler, I assume that it would cost the same as it would cost for us to get rid of Brewer (I'm speculating that Chandler's bigger contract is offset by his materially better productivity). Probably, they would have to pay an asset worth somewhere between the 20th and 35th pick of the 2017 draft or an equivalent young prospect. Maybe even more? Less? Not entirely sure. If it costs us nothing but Brewer, Nene, Ennis and Gentile, I do it. If they throw in Tucker (expiring) and we throw in KJ, I'm maybe even willing to replace Gentile with our first rounder. There is an added benefit of opening up two roster spots. A guy like Chandler gives you confidence that he will fit in with the team on the court and in the locker room, he will at the very least imo cement our record and insure our win% against ups and downs. Tucker is an expiring that would be excellent competing for SF minutes this season, and I think Morey has wanted to acquire him in the past. Having rambled on about ALLLLLLLLL that, I'm seriously on the fence. I can easily be convinced otherwise and the fact that we are playing so well is a major factor. I feel a bit of a duty to give these guys reinforcements because they have that special chemistry. I also feel like this team is putting in so much defensive effort without the appropriate players to get what they deserve from their effort. Noel is kind of the high potential prospect who could help you for a decade, but there is an undeniable risk with him being young, not yet being tested on a winning team, not ever showing that he can run a PnR like Clint. Man, Morey must be going crazy but this is actually a great position to be in. This season and next summer is going to be super important, there IS a chance to build a serious contender and there are several ways to do it. Let's see what he does, knowing that Les and MDA are certainly going to prefer not to rock the boat at all.
I would only make the deal If there is some way for Tyson to waive his final two years. Barbosa and Tucker would also be some nice players to have for a playoff run.

Larry Bird has already offered PG a contract nobody can beat. PG chose not to extend because he wants to see if Indiana can win and privately wants a bigger market. If the Pacers implode this year and miss the playoffs, he's gone imho. PG will get paid regardless. Like Tyson Chandler as a player. I think his defensive stats may be a bit misleading now and could be a result of being on a bad team-- surrounded by not so good defenders and him not giving 100% effort right now. However, given that he's got a couple more years to go on his contract ($13M next year, $13.6M the year after). I wonder about the cap impact that his contract would have on a free agent pursue.
I would be interested in him renogiating the last year of his contract as NG or making it a team option. I would accept that and swallow his salary for next year. We would all love him if he non guaranteed both years but I would love it just to lose one year, making it the same length as brewers.

Is this really a fair assessment? Chandler is the guy who has to clean up for a bunch of teenagers and Eric Bledsoe. Kanter comes off the bench for one of the best defensive teams in the league filled with great defenders. I think it's fair to say Chandler defends a much higher quantity of people attacking the rim than Kanter?

I'd rather make a run at trading for Alex Len. The Suns suck and his contract is expiring. It's very unlikely that he'll decide to stay there so it's possible the Suns could look to get something for him which could make him fairly cheap to get. He wouldn't be a world beater, but he's a big body that can give us a legitimate big man at the 5 to pull down some rebounds off the bench. I would think of it as cheap Capella/Nene insurance.
