This is criminal IMO. Was the first Rockets superstar, led league in scoring his rook season. Don't think that has ever been done since. Just because the best of his Rockets career was spent in San Diego instead of Houston is poor reason not to properly honor the Big E. Was even the first African American to play for University of Houston (along with Chaney). 44 needs to be up in the rafters.

No way tmac gets his jersey retired. He played like 5 seasons worth of games here we never got a top 2 seed with him and worst of all he never got us out the 1st round.

I like tmac but his jersey isn't getting retired for any team. He might make the HOF but he's not a guy you retire his jersey. Maybe if his orlandos days were in houston also I would consider it but as we all know they are not.

It's not coincidence that the one year mac doesn't play with Yao and we swap him out for basically artest we get out the 1st round and likely beat the champs of that year had Yao not injured himself against the lakers.

Mac is a nice guy I don't mind him being around the franchise because he gets the rockets more exposure to the fan who grew up in the mid 2000s.

But what harden has done in his 4.5 years here is light years ahead of what mac did. Harden is a real MVP type player actually won playoff series here. He'll be the next player to get his jersey retired.

Look at all the rockets records? It's either Hakeem or harden that says all I need to know about tmac.

Take that **** down then, I don't have time for Houston Cougars pee-pee games going on in MY stadium. Drexler didn't take them seriously enough to show up on time to coach the games, don't shove that Choke City trash down my throat.

Murph played 13 years for the Rockets, went to the Finals once, and had a hall of fame career where he set numerous free throw records. Moses was a 2-time league MVP here and took a 40-42 squad to the Finals. I've got no problem with either of those two having their jerseys retired.

The problem is retiring Yao's number. I get why Les did it. His presence in the NBA was a huge deal at the time and when healthy, he was a damn good player especially after his first 3 seasons when he went from All-Star to superstar. But if we're being blunt, his career was cut very short by injuries, and he never advanced past the 2nd round(and only got that far once). Now that doesn't mean he wasn't great. Chris Paul has yet to get past the 2nd round. He's a certain hall of famer. Nique never got past the 2nd round. No one would ever question his greatness.

But as a diehard Rockets fan for the past 25 years, that #11 has a special meaning to me. Mad Max wore that number when he helped turned Choke City into Clutch City in Game 3 vs Phoenix. He had a huge Game 5 against Utah to send the Rockets to the Finals. He came up big in Game 7 vs the Knicks including the decisive 3-pointer that basically sealed the win and the title. Personally, if you told me #11 had to go into the rafters and never be worn again by another Rocket, I would prefer the name Maxwell be above it instead of Yao.

Either one opens a huge can of worms though. Retire Yao's number and suddenly people will wonder why T-Mac's isn't up there along with it. Retire Maxwell's and people will ask why you haven't retired the ones for Cassell, Smith, Horry, and Elie.

The Rockets should ABSOLUTELY retire T-Mac's jersey.

That's never been an issue for other franchises. Bob Love got his #10 retired by the Bulls while everyone's favorite superagent BJ Armstrong was still wearing it. He didn't even have to give up the number. And then the Lakers retired Gail Goodrich's #25 which was being worn by Eddie Jones at the time. Jones switched to #6 the following season.

Someone please explain to me why the Rockets "retired" Carroll Dawson's initials? They couldn't honor him in some other way. It really looks stupid.

Also, does that mean we can never have a player with the last name Dawson now? lol

Yao definitely deserved to be in the hall of fame based on his skills alone. Unfortunately for Yao- and for fans of the Rockets- Yao's career was derailed and shortened by injuries. It really was a shame, we never before and probably never will again see a big man that is that big but also that talented. Someone with that much size that could still shoot those baby hook shots and turn around jumpers was simply unstoppable.

For the Hall of Fame, and for having someone's jersey retired, IMO they need to be an extremely skilled, dominant player but also over a long enough career to make an impact for their team and in the league. When Yao was being discussed for HOF and jersey retirement, for me I never questioned whether his skills were worthy but I did question whether his longevity was deserving. But, if you factor in his impact for the NBA worldwide I think that easily pushes him over the top.

IF he makes the Hall of Fame, then yeah why not? CD is retired because of his decades worth of contributions to the franchise. Its not really for the fans, but a way to memorialize him along with the other franchise greats. Other teams have non-players names or banners hanging. Dont know why it would bother you.

HOF includes college achievements, and Sampson had a great college career.

I dunno if TMac makes the hall. His peak was not very long (18,000 career points), and his peak was not very successful. If your team is not successful you open yourself up to the criticism of accruing empty stats on a losing team, a la Mitch Richmond or Kevin Love, neither of whom should make the HOF. Is Derrick Rose a HOF candidate? Because right now that's who I lump him with. Below Vince Carter and Paul Pierce and other wings who did more over a longer period of time. And way below Harden: Harden could retire right now and he's accomplished more than TMac, individually and for his team.
