What was going on in '81 that led to the 701 homicides and Houston being named murder capital?

Maybe "Capital" per capita, but there's always cities with 1000+ homicides any given year.

If i were to guess I would say the drug trade and an ill equipped law enforcement community to deal with it.

If my father is to be believed, rampant police corruption was part of the problem.

Were Sunnyside, Sharpstown, Acres Homes, Alief etc still the worst places back then?

Alief was OK in the early 90s.

Considering this thread regards United States specifically.. why introduce outside countries?

The US has cities with 1000+ murders every year.

This is your 2nd consecutive "weird" response to me.

    Those aren't the most dangerous

This is false, hence jughead's reply asking if you were Brazilian, where this does actually happen.

Sharpstown and Alief really didn't start going down until the late 80s-early 90s - the same with the Gulfton area, Michael Pollock(sp?) and his Colonial House (now Lantern Village) and the tons of other complexes in the area had all been the go-to spot for young Houstonians, by the late 80s it was crack cocaine and City Under Siege airing squads of the jump-out boys busting crack dealers which were on every corner.

    No Chicago???

Back to my original post in 81 I would have been 6 and did not grow up in Houston. Sports, oil, Paul Boesch, and Gilley's is all I know about Houston of from that time.

I'd say an explosion in growth coupled with the introduction of crack and other harder drugs. It happened all over the US in major cities coming out of the 70s. Houston combined it with huge growth.
