Barkley says Rockets to be vastly improved, Spurs will repeat

    By DAVID BARRON
    Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle

Pop quiz. Who asked the following question last week: "So have they got the knife out of Rudy T's back yet?"

You are correct. Charles Barkley is back for a new NBA season on TNT, and he's in playoff form on topics ranging from the Rockets to LeBron James to the Dallas Mavericks to the San Antonio Spurs.

One of Chuckster's opinions, as you might recall, is that the Rockets treated former coach Rudy Tomjanovich unfairly by gently pushing him out of a job after last season. Nothing new there. Barkley remains a steadfast Rudy T admirer, but he also thinks the Rockets will do well under replacement Jeff Van Gundy.

"Jeff Van Gundy is going to do a really good job," Barkley said. "I love Yao Ming, and I think it's time to start making him more of a focal point instead of Steve (Francis) and Cuttino (Mobley). Yao makes people better. Steve and Cuttino will get their numbers, but Yao makes people better. And I like Jeff as a coach. He brings that defensive mentality."

Barkley's comments came at midweek, after Eddie Griffin's suspension from the team but prior to the police visit to his home Saturday. Still, Griffin would do well to listen.

"Eddie Griffin has got to clean up his act," Barkley said. "He's got to grow up and mature and stop what he's doing. Everybody knows he's doing it. I don't want to call him out publicly, but he's got to stop what he's doing."

Barkley says the Rockets and Memphis will be the league's most improved teams this year and that the Spurs will repeat as champions, quite likely after blowing past the revamped Mavericks.

"I don't know what Dallas is doing. That (adding Antawn Jamison and Antoine Walker) ain't going to work," he said. "They'll be fun to watch during the regular season, but they'll be like that little tour where the brothers are running around. What do they call it? Streetball? They could win that. But as far as the NBA goes, they'll get beat in the playoffs."

Barkley also likes Denver's Carmelo Anthony in a walk over James as rookie of the year.

"He can't shoot," Barkley said of James. "He's got a great coach in Paul Silas, who will have a great influence on him. But the NBA is doing him a disservice showcasing him this early and putting him on TV all the time, because right now, he can't shoot. I hope he's a great player, but it's going to take him a long time."

TNT's schedule begins with a Suns-Spurs/Mavs-Lakers doubleheader Tuesday. Thursday night, Marv Albert hits town with Mike Fratello, Czar of the Telestrator, and Steve Kerr to call the Nuggets-Rockets game from Toyota Center -- assuming, of course, that Van Gundy agrees to let his former broadcast partners into the building.

King James can't shoot though, thats the truth.

I'd take Anthony over James in Rook of the Year

 This coming from the guy who Kissed Eddie's a** last year over his words on how Yao is a bust?!

"He will never score 20pts in a game, especially tonight. (Do I really need to state Yao got 22pts by halftime against the Mavs while on the air on TNT)"

I've watched about 5-8 of King James' games, and the guy's got mad game. He's got the vision and that extra sense that those truly special players had. He cant hit a jumper for his life, but what 18 year old do you know is that good? On the other hand, look at his other numbers, he collectes boards and dimes like nothing. Hes gonna be a great player very fast. And once he gets that jumper to go in more often in say 2-3 more years probably. He will be top 5 NBA player

Uprising, dont mean to start anything but Barkley said those words before the Lakers game where Yao dropped 20 I think, the Mavs game came much later

That makes sense, Sir Jackie. I was wondering what Barkley was referring to.

While dead on, it's funny to hear Barkley talk about "maturity." I like Sir Charles, but he's never struck me as a particularly "mature" individual.

it is good that he changed his opinion. of course everybody knows what he said when yao came to the nba. But he has now showed he knows he was wrong. but still it is funny to hear him say that he loves yao and thinks he should be more a focal point. especially after he said that he would never score more then 20 points.

Top 5 NBA players? You don't become a top 5 player by justing being athletic and knows how to pass/rebound. LeBron doesn't have a goto move and can't hit an open jumper. He is WAY behind Kobe/T-Mac.

:D Charles Barkley is such a Liar (yes, Liar with a capital "L").

I still laugh at his big mouth from last season that "If Yao scores 19 or more points in any one game of the season, I will kiss your (Kenny the Jet) behind". Haha, 9/9 FG from the field for 20 points at the Staples Center.

he is still 18 years old, he can pass alot better then kobe or mcrady could when they were that age. don't forget how young James is. i know he is hyped. but i do think he can become a great pleyer. i also think he can be top 5. some things he has shown so far are great, he is a team player with great court vision. you do not see that alot at that age. he ill learn to shoot the jumper.

lancet, I said that in 2-3 years once he finds his jumper he will considered a top 5 player IMO. He's that good and has that much potential. I dont see anyone who can guard him outside of maybe KG who could probbaly guard anyone. When he gets an outside game to complement the rest of his game, he will bne unstoppable offensively. As for defense, I cant say I'm too impressed with what I've seen form him so far but from all indications, he's a hard worker who is actually coachable despite all the hype. I have full confidence that with his kind of athletic talent, that he can turn out to be just as good defender at his position as anyone. Of course, this is all being based on him working his ass off the next 2-3 years to really develop his game

Jay Mariotti said it the best, "LeBron should have been practicing his jumper this off season instead of hanging out with Jay-Z."

just like with many other people, he was convinced otherwise. ;)

It is one thing to have a wrong opinion, but you shouldn't hold it against him since he changed his tune once he was shown how wrong he was.

I don't know about that. Kobe didn't do much his rookie year and neither did T-Mac, playing behind VC.

Not only that, they still can't pass like James, it's a natural talent.

He aint lying, he converted. Besides Charles always says things just to be sensational. He was critcising the way Ming played last year initally, and up to the point before Yao started to show signs of greatness, who blamed him. In fact, I'm glad he said what he said because I think it motivated Yao and made him more famous.

Any other rookie scoring his first 20 point game might get a nod on SC, but after Yao scored his first 20 point game, the media was excited and next thing you Charles kissed donkey and Yao became a superstar.

So aint nothing but luv for Chuck from me. Nice to see him also standing up for Rudy, I'm wondering if Kenny said anything about it either. Once a Rocket, always a Rocket (except if you're Pippen).
