I apologize if this has been discussed in the long thread on the Eddie Griffin assault, but I don't want to scan through however many pages to try and find it. Here's my issue: The Chronicle's article on the incident (http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/front/2180148) states that Griffin was expelled from high school for starting a fight in the cafeteria, and as it's source, it cites ClutchCity.net. Now my question is this: Where on the site is this info? I can maybe see citing a website as an acceptable source if Clutch has it somewhere on the website, but if some poster just suggested it in some thread, and now a newspaper is reprinting it, journalism has hit a new low. I can't imagine that's even close to acceptable for a middle school paper. Anyone care to point me to where the Chronicle got this information?
its not like it would be so surprising if he did start a fight in high school...he punched out a teammate at Seton Hall didnt he?
http://www.clutchcity.net/draft_profile.cfm?Player=31 Read the weaknesses part. Kudos to the Chron for citing the site.
Another source for the incident. CNNSI.com: There's some disarray at Seton Hall. It was reported on Monday that the reason coach Tommy Amaker suspended star freshman Eddie Griffin was because Griffin punched junior guard Ty Shine in the Pirates' locker room after they lost to Georgetown on Saturday. Is this something that will hurt the Hall's long-term prospects or do you think it will blow over? Seth Davis: I was at the Seton Hall-Notre Dame game on Monday night and I can tell you it hasn't blown over yet. After the game I talked to Eddie Griffin, who incidentally was expelled from his senior year in high school for getting into a fight in the cafeteria, and he did not sound very contrite. As far as Ty Shine is concerned, he is one of the more approachable players in the Seton Hall locker room and he bolted from that room before reporters even got in there. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/inside_game/seth_davis/news/2001/01/09/davis_q_a/
Thanks, I just wanted to make sure that they weren't citing a poster's comments. Sorry I couldn't track that down myself, the only place I knew to look was his player profile, and it wasn't there.
NJRocket, I think you missed the point. The issue isn't whether it's believable, the issue is that it is completely unacceptable for a newspaper to declare something as fact, using an anonymous internet poster's unconfirmed assertions as a source.
Jeez, what do you guys want. It cite the sources, as journalists should do. Believe it or not, it's readers judgement. To think that some of you complain Chron doesn't give CC.net enough credit just a while ago...
The Houston Barnicle has been getting all their Rocket news here for years. At least now they're not stealing it. Just another reason this site kicks oh so much arse.
I wish we could figure that out. Whoever you are, I'm glad you're giving CC.net more of the credit it should have gotten over the years for the vast amounts of info that flows through here. Sure, you have to seperate the wheat from the chaff, but that's true with any reporting. (it used to be easier when there were 10,000 or so fewer members!)
