"I'm sure everybody was excited about Eddie's shot blocking, (and) ability to rebound the ball, and I think everybody here is still excited about that," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said after Griffin was suspended. "As I look at Eddie, it was the right trade for Houston. Rudy (Tomjanovich, then the Rockets coach), Carroll and Les (Alexander, the Rockets owner) put a lot of trust and faith and belief in Eddie. I've tried to show him that in my time here. Now he's got to make the step forward, particularly to Rudy, Carroll and Les, to repay them. I think he wants to do that. Time will tell by his actions."

Whats not to like about JVG, look at how he sticks up for Rudy and Co. even when it is so obvious that getting Eddie was such a poor decision...

And JVG has said for the record that the teams problems were not Rudy's even if that was the truth...

    what class...

That is what I kind of liked about Eddie. He was always an enigmatic figure. I just wished he would play up to his potential.

I like JVG, too. But how do you know he's not just telling the truth?

Please let me know how it was obvious trading for Eddie was a bad decision barring the existence and usage of time travel. Rockets' fans, management and ownership were all THRILLED to pull that trade off.

Were you happy about it then or were you saying, "Eddie got in a fight in college, it is 'obvious' this guy is going to be a major bust?"

What I really like about this play is how the other Rockets set it up - this is the beautiful part....

Our guards are at the perimeter to keep their defenders out of the way. When the shot clock is at 11 secs, Ron Mercer (no. 33) is at the top of the key and Turkoglu (no. 14) comes out to the free throw line. He tries to get back in time, but he's too late. The only way they could help is if they try to defend a "Yao-kicks-it-out-to-the-shooter" shot.

Our other two players move to the opposite side of the paint from Yao, leading their defenders into awkward positions and spreading the floor to give Yao lots of room. Rose (no.31) ends up in the under-the-hoop position where he can't draw a charge and has little chance of blocking a Yao dunk. Shane Heal (no. 11) is drawn to the opposite side of the paint and can't get to Yao in time to double-team him. That leaves Yao one-on-one with Robert Horry who is 7 inches shorter than Yao and obviously can't stop him.

It's team harmony: coach conceives it, players build it, Yao finishes it.

    It's symphonic

You liked the fact that he had no potential except for exploding off the court?

    Ok...

I still don't know what potential people saw in him.

If you ignore the fact that he was overrated in college and hs, what led people to see anything in him?

Never ever invest too heavily in someone with a shady background and character.

As lazy as he was, Cato showed up and didn't quit on the team the way Eddie has.

He also isn't shooting at people in his free time.

I just want to say that I believe Jeff Van Gundy is handling this situation perfectly. He is publicly supportive of Eddie, and seems to genuinely like him, and want him back on the team. But he is also moving forward and refuses to let Eddie's troubles affect the way he approaches the upcoming season.

I really hope Eddie gets himself worked out and can rejoin the team. I like the guy.

Jeff Van Gundy had a reputation as being a tough guy and a disciplinarian. But in this instance im glad he is reaching out to Eddie and giving him every chance to set things right. I hope Eddie takes that chance if its not too late.
