I'd like to connect my PS4 via Ethernet as opposed to using wifi. In the room I'm currently using as my man cave, there ia both a phone and cable jack. My main modem / router are out in the living room and with the signal having to go through multiple walls, it occasionally drops. So what do I need to do? Just hook up a modem to the phone jack, go through a router, and from that router connect to the PS4? Is that the only way? I have a spare router and could probably find some cheap refurbished modem if I needed to.
Do you have a master panel? They're usually in the master closet. That's where all your ports are connected to. I'd put the modem and router there. Then purchase an Ethernet switch. Connect the switch to an Ethernet out of the router and plug all the other Ethernet wires from the master panel into the switch. All those Ethernet wires you just connected will be an extension of the router and all the ports in your house should be connected. You could purchase another modem (I'm assuming this is AT&T since you say phone jack), but then that'd have to be activated by AT&T. I've never connected two modems in one house, so I don't know if it's possible or not but I don't see why not. Going that route, you'd have two different networks for your house.
You can't put another modem on the line unless you want to pay for a complete new account. You have a couple different options. -Run a hardwire from your mancave to wherever the modem/router is now -If its a newer house, they usually use CAT5 for telephones. If it is and its home run to a central location, you can swap everything over to RJ45 from RJ11. You will need to figure out how everything is ran, of course. -Buy a couple of those power adapters that plug into the wall and let you run a network connection over your electrical. The reliability of these are hit and miss.
Power line is okay if you have a newish home rather than living in a complex. Nowadays it's cheap enough to try one out if only to see the amount of interference you get in your house.
Solid advice. I always prefer ethernet too vs power adapters (even though they've gotten better nothing beats ethernet run).
Having the same issue at my new place. Have super fast Xfinity WiFi but it only broadcasts on 5.0ghz band which Sony stupidly did not think would be necessary to include in the PS4 architecture. Running off the dual band router but the 2.4 band is much slower. Getting only about 11mbps on average. Going to try a power line adapter from Amazon. If it doesn't work I'll just return it.
Just something else to add... is if you have other devices in the man cave that can use ethernet vs wireless you could easily add a switch there (instead of doing multiple runs). A cheap gigabit switch will be solid, especially since the ps4/other streaming devices can't saturate that speed. If you got a basic switch you don't even need to do anything other than plug it in, or you could even use your existing extra router and make another wireless access point that's hard wired and can act as a switch (allowing devices to plug in still as hard wired). Just make sure on the 2.4 GHz that you're on non-overlapping channels 1, 6,11 etc. (can be variants but depending on situation those are normally safest, especially if you're using the same ssid).
I think powerline is better than wifi for games if no direct ethernet option since ping is the most important thing, but I would still try logging into the modem/gateway as an admin (assuming you're using their equipment), since their device should have both and they might have just turned it off. 5ghz is great in the same room/proximity but doesn't have the range of 2.4. Also if you're using your own router I'd recommend looking into setting their modem/gateway in bridge mode, assuming you have a decent router. There also should be some guides to get a lot more out of it, for example if it's newer and on the 2.4 you're using old equipment along with the ps4 it might be limiting the bandwidth to 11 (assuming using a B network protocol instead of using G/N etc. I always force the router to the latest protocols if I'm not using legacy equipment on the SSID. On a side note, I am not super in the know on xfinitys equipment but I have never seen a device/ap have 5 and not 2.4, yes I've seen 2.4 only but not the other way around. Best of luck!
This, or try running a long ass Ethernet cable to it if you are able to run it through the attic and the wall. Not very difficult or expensive.
The issue is with Sony, not Comcast. PS4 doesn't support 5.0 so I can only connect it to the 2.4 which is much slower.
Ah gotcha, I would try seeing if you can adjust the protocol to force g/n or even try a different channel by logging in as an Admin to the gateway. Sorry I misread the router/Sony part. I mean regardless power adapter will be better but you might be able to get more out of 2.4. For example, I'm getting around 100 mbit+ on 2.4 but 250-300+ on 5 on my phone/computer but obviously Sony might have really gone cheap on the radio.
Too bad. They really come in handy for devices that either need or are better utilized with Ethernet.
If you have a cable modem, you could do MOCA if you have an existing cable outlest. Otherwise you'll have to run ethernet from your patch, or do powerline.
Sounds good, I hope it works out! Hopefully even if you get the power adapter you might get lucky in the mean time or at least get better performance on other devices that might use the 2.4. And on a side note I'm really surprised sony did that too.
