If there was any "wink-wink" deal behind scenes (how did that get to be an every day term?) I say we just keep it. Let him play next year on his option at whatever it's set at, pick up CWebb (or whatever else we have on the slate this offseason) and do whatever it is we plan on doing with Taylor and Dream then pay Shanderson whatever we want in the 2002 offseason. I don't know anything about the way contracts work in the NBA, but it seems to me like this shouldn't be a cap problem unless Sandon wants to leave or demands the money now. ------------------
TheRedSon, so you hope Shandon doesn't opt out his contract and play one more year at his current salary. sure it's good for the Rockets, but what if Shandon get hurt next season and won't be able to play? do we still sign him a logn term contract and give him the big bucks? Shondon already take less money to play for Houston why should he take that kind of risk? "everytime he shoots the ball I'm in shock when he hits the shot."--- Band Geek Mobster Shandon made 47% of his shot that's better than Steve and Mobley; so, when you see Shandon hits the shot you don't have to be "in shock" in fact, Shandon rarely take bad shot. everytime he shoots the ball I cheer for him because most of them hits. well actually I'm in shock when I see Mobley take those bad shots and then hits ------------------
Shandon can have a great life at 7yrs with average starting salary. That will be like $37m guaranteed. I would sign him to 7yrs in a heartbeat. In a tough negotiating position, we must realize that Shandon is the best fastbreak player on our team, aside from his no injuries, 40+ minutes, and stellar defense. Finding a replacement in the draft is not that easy. Besides we need to beef up the frontline in the draft not lose a guard and have to replace something that is solid. Bag him. Get Shandon signed. He will take $5m starting for 7yrs. I'm sure he will. Go above the Early Bird by a million if you have to. Unless of course, Webber signs, then all bets are off. Mobley has to understand that he signed after 2 yrs before really proving he was a stud. Comparing the two contracts is not right.
heypartner, I'd agree w/ you... but Shandon brings down the team's starting dpr: draft pick ratio. Cuttino is at 48. Shandon was a 54? That's too low. We need a 13-15er at the 3 in the starting lineup if we want to have a good enough dpr to compete. ------------------ git it tag, git it!
Shandon is not going anywhere. Where would he go? Almost no one is going to have cap space. Those who do: Detroit, Chicago. Going to be a long wait for the playoffs there. Early Bird or not, Shandon's only smart play is with the Rockets, and with CD & Rudy's track record, I'm sure they will find a way to do right by him. ------------------ "Someday I'd like to do something really meaningful with my life. Like burn Stockton to the ground!" - Henry Rollins
hp--You make this great post about the virtues of Shandon, then you ruin it all with the Webber comment. I thought you were the big champion of CHEMISTRY? You want to throw away all we've been building the past couple of years and go for the quick fix with Webber? Have you forgotten CBFC's "Good Time to be a Rocketfan" post? GETTING THERE is the fun part. I say sign Mo, make the most of our at the minimum 2 FIRST ROUND PICKS, and see what else we can get on the FA market this year. Ask Shandon to wait another year (which I thought they would do anyway) and then sign him to whatever we want with Bird rights. That's my gut feeling at the moment. Besides, Webber's already been in the league 8 years--he's not going to get any better. I wouldn't mind seeing all our guys peak at the same time. That's how we did it before, and it was amazing. We tried for the quick fix twice with Barkley and Pippen, and that sucked. I was in favor of both deals, and would do them both over again, but IT'S SO MUCH MORE FUN THE OTHER WAY! As good as he is, I just can't get on the Webber bandwagon. Mo is sweet!
So far Shandon is being torched by an ancient Tony Kukoch. No way he deserves 8 million. ------------------ "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning how to put food on their family while being put to death."
TheFreak just say heypocrasy. Really though...I am huge on status quo with our 3 guard line-up. What I was saying is mere arithematic. If Shandon takes an Early Bird or anything other, it must be after a Webber signing. One thing about me, is I think Webber is the best power forward in the game right now,,,,hands down...he is the best....the best. Noting that I said Webber is the best in my opinion, I am willing to ask Shandon to not sign until after Webber commits. If Fegan is not up to that...then we can't offer Webber a competitive contract. I would not allow Fegan to put us in a position to not allow Webber a competitive offer. I love you grabbed some archives...that is awesome...TheFreak rocks!!!! i want shandon...really bad. I want to give Webber a competitive offer too. With Webber we can drop a guard. It is a timing thing. bottomline: in heated negotiation I would drop shandon and keep Mo in a situation where Webber comes here. btw Freak, honestly ... really... outside the bbs, I really would rather build over 5 years from only draft picks, and continue championing status quoe....but I love Webber...he is the the the best power forward in the game, imo...and I love the way he handles himself....any other FA power forward other than garnett,,,I would not be saying Shandon is off if X happened. TheFreak, you are trying to make me turn in my sleep at night. b*stard
Does anybody remember who else played on the Rockets with a bad shot, but an awesome driving game? ------------------ "The Holocaust was an obscene period in our nation's history. I mean in this century's history. But we all lived in this century. I didn't live in this century." -Dan Quayle
Sure Houston has "wink wink" deals, look at Charles Barkley during the Scottie Quitten signing! I think Shandon should get 5.5 million like someone said earlier. Anything more and we have to walk. I don't think the Rockets reputation would be hurt as much as people think, and it's not like they're giving him scraps! ------------------ Rocks2001 in disguise. . .
This draft will have some good SF. And the Rockets have some draft picks to make some good decisions! And if Langi pans out along with a rookie SF and Walt Williams, then what is the facination with Anderson. Sure he gets stuck with the tough assignments night in and night out. But that's because he can't be counted on to score. Face it, if you can't at least excell in one thing in the NBA well, yourself won't be making beacou money!!! And nope, I don't think Anderson is the best defensive SF/SG in the league. Sure he is better than average. But, hey I'd like Shandon to add more aresnol to his repetoir before I'd want to comit 7 to 8 million a year to him. Mobley is a Rocket super star. Anderson is merley a role player! An Elie type of player!! And yes you do need key role players, but as I see it, key role players should top out at 5 million a year. 8 points a game just won't do it for me!!! ------------------
The reason Shandon has a 47 % shooting percentage is b/c he doesn't take that many shots and the shots he makes are layups. I hardly ever see him take a jump shot, but when he does take a jump shot thats when I worry. ------------------ Cause I'm a twenty first century digital boy. Mobley is underpaid. So when discussing Shandon's future contract, are we comparing it to what Mobley makes now, or what he should make? ------------------ The Rockets will be the NBA champions. Believe.
