http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/nba-changes-all-star-voting/ar-AAlKrUA NBA fans aren't the only ones who will be voting for the 2017 All-Star starters. For the first time, NBA players and select basketball media members will vote for the Eastern and Western conference starters in the Feb. 19 game in New Orleans, the league said in a news release. Fans will make up 50% of the vote, and NBA players and media each will comprise 25% of the vote. This is a major change to the voting format and may -- we will see how the results play out -- balance out the annual dilemma of voting for popular players vs. players who deserve to start. Like the fans, players and media will vote for two backcourt players and three frontcourt players. Each player and media member can vote once, and players can vote for themselves and teammates. Player and media votes will not be disclosed, and about 75 media members will vote. Voting begins on Christmas, ends on Jan. 16, and the starters will be announced Jan. 19 on TNT. Fans will be able to vote several ways: -- Nba.com/vote -- On the NBA app on Android and iOS. -- Twitter, by using the player's first name and last name or twitter handle and the hashtag #nbavote -- Facebook, by using the player's first name and last name and the hashtag #nbavote -- Google search, by searching for "NBA Vote All-Star" or "NBA Vote team name" (example: NBA Vote Warriors) and use the voting cards to select. -- On Twitter, Facebook and Google, fans can submit votes for 10 different players per day during the voting period.
I think it hurts steph. Harden won the MVP with his peers 2 yrs ago. I think Harden gets more respect among players than media and fans
That's for sure but media and fans still make up 75% of the vote. Plus you will get players who will vote for 'their boy' anyway. Still a step in the right direction
I don't see the big difference. End of the day still a popularity award. The All-NBA type awards at the end of the year is still more accurate.
I like it better this way. It shouldnt be a PURE fan vote, especially when NBA contracts have incentives based on All-Star appearances and it still carries as much weight as All-NBA appearances Though the Twitter and Facebook method seems ripe for ballot stuffing, just using a bunch of hashtags for multiple votes, and using all out social marketing blitzes.
The change is good. Fan vote = popularity. Media+players+fan = deserving. Harden will lose to Westbrook and Curry in the fan vote. But now? He has a chance to crack the starting lineup.
Agents and GMs don't have to tie incentives to ASGs; they just choose to. You sound like a purist that wants the best players in the ASG. The League is not a purist. They want to maximize their earnings. What do they care if people rig the vote with social marketing blitzes? That's more media impressions for them, more interest in the game, and ultimately more tickets sold.
Agree actually. Didnt mean to make it look purist. Just saying it doesnt need to be ALL fan voting now (take out the word "Pure", replace with "All") Can see how it looked like I was picking on fans, or on the league for giving fans too much influence. But I've always backed the "What FANS WANT" approach in my posting history. If fans want to choose the best showmen instead of slow boring players, its their right to have a game custom fit to their tastes. If you put in a player based on how he dresses over how he plays, you can convey that into a vote and appearance in game. However the "All-Star" designation IS attributed 80% to mean "best talented players", no matter how its SUPPOSED to be for fans ... So since theyre already going away from fan influence, might as well include voting by merit too.
