Best answer yet. I went to the dentist several years ago to get this done. He said we'll either be able to pull them out or we may have to break a bone to remove them. At least I think those were his words... All I know is the dude was about to hop up on the chair with me trying to get leverage on this screwdrivervicethingamajiggy in order to pull the teeth out. Talk about scared to death - I almost peed on myself; I thought the guy was gonna kill me. I shoulda known something was up when his assistant started numbing the wrong teeth and he came in and started saying "no, no, not those".
only five years? you wuss! i havent been since april of 1996. i had a dentist who used to be an army surgeon and needless to say, he was a little "rough". last time i went they told me i would need my wisdom teeth removed. i didnt like what he was telling me so i just never went back. both my top wisdom teeth have completely grown in and one of my bottom ones is about halfway up. maybe like once a year they will give me some pain for a few days, but other than that no problems. im actually thinking of getting the ones that have grown pulled out. that way i can avoid having to go to a surgeon.
I had all 4 of mine cut out. They were all below the gums. I was knocked out the entire time so I didn't feel a thing. I woke up in the recovery room and they sent me on my way. I slept for 3 days straight. I would wake up only to take a sip of sprite and a spoon full of soup so I could take my medicine (oxycodin). I have heard several instances where people complained of pain, but I didnt have any. Although, it could be the fact that i was never awake. The worst feeling for me had to be stuffing all the gauze into my mouth to catch the bleeding. I couldn't spit so when I would rinse out my mouth I would just let the water fall out. My teeth hurt like hell so I had to get them removed. I was told that it was best to get them removed even if they had already grown in. Hope this helps.
Ditto to all that candycane said. I had to have a little of my jawbone removed along with my wisom teeth though because instead of growing up mine grew under the gumline at an angle and my jaws were hurting but the wisdom teeth were the problem and about a week after the surgery all was well.
I had a bad experience with my last set just this past August. No anaesthesia. The top one came out quickly. The bottom one cracked; he pulled out half. The remaining half was stubborn so he cut it in half. Half of that half came out pretty easily. Time elapsed 10 minutes. Then the fun began. The remnant part took another half an hour. My gums were sorely bruised as he wrenched and twisted to get that sucker out. I lived with a nuisance of a discomfort for about another month while the bruising healed. The first pair done five years ago was pretty easy.
I had all 4 out last year...was pretty scared going in but definitely not as bad as I expected. Was sore for a few days, and the changing of the bloody gauze every few hours was pretty gross, but not too bad at all...
Keeley is suggesting we change her member status to "Gumby". ... ok, I'm kidding. I actually suggested that.
sorry RM95 - I had the perfect experience.... I had my wisdom teeth pulled, all 4. There was minor bleeding, I took 1 pain pill and ate the same night! My wife just had all 4 pulled last week and her face is finally getting back to normal after a week. Her mouth still hurts... We used the same dentist...
Is there a difference in pain between having the top ones and bottom ones removed? All I have is 2 and they both are top ones and one has just started to come in.
As mentioned before, it depends on the person's ability to deal with pain and the situation with their teeth. I had an option between IV and the gas. Took the gas because being out of it isn't for me. The gas was so mellowing, that the dentist's assistant had to tell me to quit talking during the procedure. I could feel him tugging, but could deal with it. I was driving down the freeway 20 minutes after the last tooth was pulled. Took pain pills for 1.5 days and gave them up because they made me too sleepy. Was good to go the second day after the procedure. Plan your meals for the next several days because you might not feel like going out shopping and/or doing serious cooking for the first few days. Popcorn shrimp and bananas worked for me. Bottom Line: It just depends
There is no difference. They prefer to pull a complete side, though, because the teeth "instinctively" grow toward each other. If they just take out the bottom left one, for example, the top left one might grow exceptionally long. I don' tknow if this is the case if either one, top or bottom, has not broken through the gumline. I had the right side done 5-6 years ago and the left side done this past summer.
I had mine out about 5 years ago. No problems I was back on solids after 2 days. I had some good pain meds and just laid around the house for the weekend. One thing though, they gave me demyrol for the extraction and I fell asleep. I woke up in the middle of it to my head yanking sideways. The doctor was having trouble getting one out so he was yanking it. My brother-in-law had his done by some back woods dentist. They gave him some pain meds that did not make him sleep (He did not feel anytihng though). He was awake for the whole thing and once the doctor got his teeth loose he my brother-in-law pull his own teeth. To make matters worse they let him drive himself home after the surgery. ALso, If you are trying to decide whether to ge tthem all done or just some. My advice is to get them all out at once, if there is any chance you might need to have them out later. It is much easier on you to have them all done in one sitting than to have to go back a second time. It's also a little cheaper.
