Don't know if enough people realize that the best beans in the world can taste like crap if the grind, water, temperature, and method aren't utilized correctly.

By the same token below average beans can be made to taste decent if made properly.

In houston, try the pour over at Catalina's. Amazing coffee!

I know you're not supposed to like anything but locally roasted boutique type stuff, and it can be great, but I've found it's hit & miss. You have to know what's good, & that seems to vary from batch to batch. Every now & then they might recommend a random Ethiopian single origin or something as a must try, and it'll be awesome, but then might not even have it at all next time. Meanwhile starbucks whole bean generally can't be as good & obviously nowhere near as freshly roasted, but tastes great to me, & is consistently good most importantly. I know what to expect every time, maybe not great by true enthusiasts' standards, but never bad by mine.

Similar with brewing- my vacuum/siphon pot (using the good locally fresh roasted coffee & expensive burr grinder, bottled water etc.) I could occasionally, accidentally get an over the top amazing pot maybe once a week, but most of the time not much if any better than a $15 walmart auto drip machine- and sometimes not even as good as that. Granted that's obviously user error, since it's capable of doing better, but that's the reality of my choice, so I've simplified- auto drip pot, starbucks whole bean, & still use good water & grinder.

Just can't call myself a true coffee snob. But love my coffee.

Well looking at my convoluted wall of text vs. everyone else's short & straightforward answers... I'm definitely drinking too much coffee.

"Craft beer can be great, but inconsistent. Those BMC beers, they've got their crap together."

Well I guess that depends on what you call affordable. :)

I recommend this one. I've had it for a few years and use it every day. I own a few coffee shops and this bad boy will put out close to what you get in some of the best coffee shops around town. Of course you do have to use quality beans.

There's this local roaster here in Dallas that makes my favorite blend right now. Oak Cliff Roasters Rosemont Crest. It's bright and flavorful with mimimal bitterness. My favorite way to prep this is an Aeropress directly over ice and its outstanding for the summer.

Taster's Coffee with caramel machiatto is nothing but wins. I can't believe people overpay for nasty coffee at starbucks.
