Major was a great recruiter as an assistant coach at UT. It seems like he continued that at Houston, but I'm wondering if he's only great at bringing recruits in for the head coach to close (that was often the case at Texas with Mack).
Agreed. I hope we didn't screw up... either Kiffin or Miles would've been awesome. FWIW, 610 reported Archie Manning predicted Major would be an awesome coach when he attended his football camp as a kid. Maybe he balls out. He's gonna have access to the best talent and talent that wants to play in Houston.
Right, seems it's good for any young coach to have experienced defensive help. Kubiak-Bush-Wade BoB-RAC
It's not a splashy hire but but I'm feeling good about it. The players support him, he was a big reason our offense was so good, and he's got Texas ties which should help with recruiting. What's a big name if it doesn't produce results? And we don't know if Kiffin or Miles could have done that. Not saying Major will, but I'm confident the administration knows what it's doing and that he can continue the success we've had.
Sure, but I didn't mean Lane in particular. UH's main concern in the search was long term stability. Of course I understand why that's important, but until they're in a bigger conference a bigger name or an up and coming coach simply isn't going to pass up the opportunity to bolt to a major program. I say embrace it, UH football has certainly been more fun on this carousel than any time I can previously remember. Hopefully Applewhite is awesome though. I certainly think we should be in a position where we no longer lose coaches to schools like Baylor.
Why do you guys hate this hire? I think is a good one, they pretty much get to keep the same system. What did guys expected? This the best they could get anyway.
I was disappointed when I heard the news, but after reading thu comments here, in the Chronicle and even the UH press release I feel better. The players seem to like him, I think he can recruit and he certainly brings continuity But here is my question. Will MA continue to call plays as a head coach, or will that be a duty of the OC? Staff is going to be critical. Would not surprise me to see a high school coach be put on staff, partially as a boos to recruiting. Do we need a good OC or does Applewhite fill that slot. Oliver will make any DC look decent, and the chance to coach him makes the position more appealing. Any ideas, suggestions or rumors on coordinators?
For the past 12 months or so (longer if you're older), UH supporters have hated everything: first UT (and always) UT, then the BigXII, then something else, then UT again, then Tom Herman, then themselves, then Major Applewhite, then...?
I am not a big UH guy, so sorry I didn't understand what you said. Explain to me again why you hate the hire?
Sorry, dude. I was making a joke about how the Coogs have hated everything related to UT for years and this is just another brick in the wall. I don't know why they hate Major Coach.
Major needs to hire a good staff and we can keep rolling. It seems like for some of our verbals having Major stay is going to keep them in the fold especially the 2 guys Herman's staff have been trying to steal the last week. There are 2 in the list that have went to soft verbal but they might be waiting to see who the new DC is going to be to make sure they like the style of play before they give the thumbs up they are all in with Major. The contract as it is now isn't a crazy buyout but if he kicks ass year one and they give him a new deal ala Herman it could make it harder for a P5 program to steal him unless its one with crazy money. The contract now is good that if he sucks we can get rid of him like Levine and not be like Tech and not being able to afford to fire the coach. Major's deal unlike Herman's mean they would have to pay the remaining years on the deal at full value to hire him away. Herman's deal was at around 3 mill per year but the buyout was only 2.5 million.
Agreed. This almost guarantees Orlando leaves. The only thing I can think of is Orlando didn't agree to the salary or buyout knowing he could join Herman at UT.
Or they knew Major would be the more likely choice between the 2 and didn't give him the interim tag so he could recruit more. Head Coaches are limited in the number of visits they can make. From a recruiting standpoint, it might have worked out since Major can now take a 2nd visit to these kids as HC.
