Does the D-Mo situation impact restricted free agency in the future?

This may be just a fluke and not something that will be done in the future, but I found it interesting just the same.

It seems the Rockets and D-Mo discovered a loophole, a way for a restricted free agent offer sheet to be tossed out the window and a new deal to be struck.

What is to stop a team and restricted free agent from altering deals in the future? Obviously if it's straight up guaranteed cash there isn't much incentive, but even a team deciding they don't want a player to hold trade veto rights for a year -- they could offer a million or two more to sign their own deal with the player.

Am I overthinking this or will this be used to circumvent the process in the future?

Possibly, but I don't see many scenarios in which this would be something a team would want to do. DMo's situation was unique because of the uncertainty of his health, and the Rockets valuing team options so much in his deal that they were willing to overlook other aspects. Otherwise (depending on the final interpretation of this uncertainty/loophole) I think teams would just be fine with not paying their player and waiting him out.

Role players are interchangeable and replaceable.

I think Dmo who has not developed beyond that had to wait awfully long for a contract.

His back issues played a part and his 'too smart for himself' type of sports agent.

Teams are still going to as you said 'wait it out' in the near future.

    Yeah, this was...unusual.

I was always under the impression that matching a RFA was just that, matching, nothing more, nothing less. I didn't realize incentives didn't have to be matched, or that once matched the two sides could basically throw the deal out and do it again. Did we leave ourselves open to a Carlos Boozer situation, because I can see why teams would be gun shy about that.

I could see a lot of situations now where two sides can use the matched offer as basically a starting point. Then again, we could have just said deal with it and done nothing..

Yeah, it seems that a team can match an offer sheet and then immediately renegotiate a similar contract but differently structured. I can see how it could un-poison a poison pill contract, for example.

when one person tries it, everyone else will too.. what this shows me is the me simplier the contract the more restrictions and harder to match. By putting all the cutes stuff in, makes the contract favorable one side but easier for the other side to repel.

I feel like the current team has a leg up on this, every time they match, it will eliminate the current suitor for 1 year and limit the market.
The bad thing about this is, taking into account all the cute stuff will make RFA much longer and more dramatic than before.

It does in the fact that:

    1. Players should be more informed and educated on terms of what they're signing
    2. Agents need to learn from this colossal **** up that they need to go back to the school of negotiations
    3. GMs can always count on BJ Armstrong to know his rights
