I agree that the atkins is niether beneficial to athletes nor is it very healthy. However, as a fat loss tool it is very effective. I will not use this diet for life, not even until the end of the year. But it has been effective to lose body fat. I will stay on the low end of the carb spectrum however. I never said that my bfp was my health goal, only my fat goal. The reason for this was I ran into an ex girlfriend who told me that I had lost my six pack. I wanted it back so that when I see her again I can go "take that momma". It was merely an experiment. There is no way I can maintain these diet restrictions for an extended period of time. Besides I can't stand losing strength in the gym.
Thanks for the info on your low-carb experiment LeGrouper. I never thought about the impact of induction on someone who was already fairly thin. It sounds like you are on the right track when you talk about doing lifetime maintenance at 100 grams of carbs. With your lifestyle, that's probably a good guess for your CCLM (critical carbohydrate level for maintenance).
I went off of caffiene at the same time. I was kinda lucky that I had a cold at the same time, so I couldn't really experience the agony of sugar cravings and caffiene headaches since I felt like crap.
I did. Just because the medical establishment 'believes' it ... is not thoughtful. As for the cancer angle, yeah, that will take years to assess. As for 'strict' Atkins, I don't think he expects you to stay on induction ( and off fruit with their antioxidants ) forever. FWIW, I must admit, my veggie intake increased substantially under Atkins.
What people need to remember about diets is that not everyone requires the same foods, not everyone does well on the same foods and not everyone can lose weight on the same foods. And before people get anti-atkins, they need to realize that atkins is helping some people lose weight who could not before and that has many advantages besides what a more balanced diet can provide. As far as cancer goes, if people went through life avoiding everything that could cause cancer they would live in a bubble eating organic fruit and soybeans. People need to accept other people's choices about their own diets and choose their own diet as they see fit. It is fun to learn from others experiences. That is why I like Dak's posts about his experience. It sounds like it was a good choice for him. That doesn't mean it would be for everyone.
My buddy lost 100 lbs on the Atkins dies over the span of 9 months and is now pimping the ladies. If you exercise and get on this diet you WILL see results. Don't give up on it guys.
I am around 177-178 now, and my wife is telling me that I have lost enough...I still have about 5 pounds or so to go..... I love it...... I eat what I like, and watch my carb intake. The scale is my friend again....my dad is coming in next week, and he has no idea. I have lost 9" in circumference from my stomach/waist and am noticably thinner all over. I can not tell you how well it is working for me....also the Ketostix you can whiz on, give enormous pyschological support. Nothing like purple baby !! LONG LIVE THE PURPLE !! DD
Here's the diet I used, eat a good break fast, good lunch, no supper and drink at least 70 oz. of water a day. From early June of 98 to the first of Oct. of 98, I lost 70 lbs. But the topper was by the next June I lost 200 more pounds, I got a divorce.
I was on the Atkins Diet for 1.5 months and lost 15 lbs. I've been off for about 2 months now and have put about 5 lbs back on. I'm going to start back up again real soon and get back on track.
All you Atkins guys need to be aware of this. My sister works at HEB...she attends all the administrative meetings, and word is that the price of red meat is about to skyrocket. No joke. She says that the current price is something like $.30 per hoof lb and it is going to jump to $.80 per hoof lb. She said that this was nationwide...not local, and the reason given is supply/demand from the Atkins era. She said pork, chicken, and fish won't really be affected, but red meat is on the rise. I just wanted to pass this info on in this thread...seems appropriate.
How many of you had headaches when initially starting the program? I'm trying to ease my way into the program and have a throbbing headache after day one. It might not even be releated but I have heard mentions of headaches before.
