Here is the simplest answer; D-Mo had 2 offers, one from Utah and one from Nets. Utah offered more money while Nets offered a bigger role and more PT. D-Mo chose the latter over the former, but then the Rockets matched, leaving D-Mo with less money and arguably a lesser role and less PT among Ryno, Capela, Nene, and a developing Trez. Now D-Mo and BJ want the bigger money after the fact.
DD sighting! I was wondering when you'd show up today. And I agree, Morey would be wise to waive the physical but I'm sure he's worried about D-Mo resenting the Rockets organization and pouting the whole season if that happened. Would definitely affect team chemistry. That's the only reason I can think of for him NOT to waive the physical.
If DMo actually doesn't want to play for the Rockets, he screwed up big time. As a RFA his only option to guarantee not suiting up for Houston while still getting paid to play bball was to go play overseas. There was absolutely no other option for him - yet here he is wasting everyone's time and causing issues for the Rox organization.
This is basically the conclusion I'm driving at. No way that DMo wants to be in the middle of this ****. He just wants to play.
Sports Agent 101: Don't sign a binding offer sheet if you don't really intend on accepting the outcome and/or abiding by the rules laid out therein. Sports Agent 201: If a larger offer is being made and/or negotiated, don't sign the smaller one first. If you do that, you can't ALSO accept the larger offer after the fact. Sports Agent 301: Soliciting a larger offer AFTER signing a contract/offer sheet from a different team is called TAMPERING. And could result in the loss of reputation and job and in being the laughing stock and biggest douche of the sports agency industry. See: Sports Agent 101 Please go back to school BJ. I realize this is complicated sh*t
because, teams don't follow up deals that are signed with "bigger deals" - what is the point? Did the Rockets offer Kent Bazemore a bigger contract after he re-signed with Atlanta?
I just don't see any other way for the team to go forward, making him a RFA would mean it would cost them more money - they did what they had to do in matching, this is 100% on BJ and DMo - it is their screw up not the Rockets. Morey should take a hard line here. DD
I do not think they can say that he does not want to play for the Rockets then it would be tampering, but rather saying that he would love to play for the Rockets and not showing up to take the physical and hoping the Rockets rescind the contract allowing him to listen and sign other offers for the Rockets to match. It's a real dirty way of getting more money from Houston and unfortunately for us other teams want to play ball!! The smartest thing for Houston to do is keep the contract and work with the NBA to make it unpaid until he shows up for his physical, he either plays for us and gets pad or does not play or get paid at all!! If you wanted to play for another team should have signed the contract before the November 23rd deadline period.
Is there a way to go back and interpret holic's posts to predict exactly this situation? Would be hard to do but I know he will try. God speed, holic. God speed.
My understanding is that the Rockets can now cancel the deal and the Nets cannot sign him for a year, which would give the Jazz the ability to make their own offer... if the Rockets do indeed cancel the deal. If they don't cancel, I believe they just hold him to it and dock his pay for as long as they hold his option.
I say the Rockets just pay D-Mo whatever extra $ Utah is offering under the table so they can live happily ever after. The league is a joke rn.
So it isn't about "rights", it's about money. What a shock! Rockets should tell him either report or wait until the offer expires on March 1st. Then he can sign with Utah or whoever (besides the Nets).
to paraphrase Sportin' Life, it take EXPERT to sign restricted free agent that already signed an offer sheet!
