Hypothetically, if we hadn't traded our 3 first round selections for Eddie Griffin in the 2001 NBA Draft, who do you think the Rockets would have chosen (based on the team's need at the time)? Here's a list of a few players that were available for Houston at the 13th selection (the Rockets' first of 3 orginal draft picks):

    - Richard Jefferson (SF)
    - Troy Murphy (PF)
    - Steven Hunter (C)
    - Kirk Haston (PF)
    - Michael Bradley (PF)
    - Jason Collins (C)
    - Zach Randolph (PF)
    - Brendan Haywood (C)
    - Joe Forte (SG)
    - Jeryl Sasser (PG/SG)
    - Brandon Armstrong (SG)
    - Raul Lopez (PG)
    - Gerald Wallace (SF)
    - Samuel Dalembert (C)
    - Jamal Tinsley (PG)
    - Tony Parker (PG)
    - Trenton Hassell (SG)
    - Gilbert Arenas (PG)

I know this has been beaten to death at times. This is not, however, a bash on Griffin at the moment because I still think he can be a great player and a valuable asset for our team. At this point there are several guys from the above list that have proven quite a bit more in their short careers than Griff. Take into consideration we had the #13th, 18th, 23rd picks in the '01 draft. Here's my take:

    #13) Richard Jefferson (SF)
    #18) Zach Randolph (PF)
    #23) Tony Parker (PG)

Richard Jefferson could have obviously taken over for our SF woes. Randolph would have been groomed as our talented 4 for the future behind Taylor, and a backcourt combo of Francis and Parker interchangebly would be electrifying. Could you imagine those three added to last season's lineup including Yao?

    Francis / Parker / Norris
    Mobley / Parker
    Jefferson / Rice / Nachbar
    Taylor / Randolph
    Ming / Cato

say we don't trade those 3 picks for Eddie Griffin. Say we pick up Jefferson who the Rockets coaches liked all along. Do the Rockets have the exact same record at the end of the year? Do they go into the lottery as the 6th seed and win the first pick? Its very very unlikley. So in hindsight the Rockets should feel lucky they did not select Jefferson and whoever because if they did the same scenario that had to happen just the way it had to happen in order for the Rockets to win the lottery that year, would not of happen. Pick Jefferson and the Rockets have a better record and they don't get the 6 pick that ends up as the lottery winner that year.

We get Eddie Griffin, Yao Ming, and save a roster spot for Mike Wilks.

i know you're just doing it for fun, but, we don't draft eddie griffin we probably don't have the exact same record and probably also lose the chance to draft yao ming. personally i don't think that's worth having richard jefferson or troy murphy or whoever else.

with that being the case, i'm glad with the way things are and just hope that eddie can prove everyone wrong and get his life straight.

Back then I would have taken Brenda Hayword. Nobody would have (did) take Parker that high.

I realize that the Rockets most likely wouldn't have the same roster. We might not have let go of Rudy in favor of Van Gundy. Our records would have been different to this point, we probablly wouldn't have won the lottery and gotten Yao. I understand that this isn't and wasn't a possiblity at any time. I was just curious, everything aside (knowing how each of these players has already impacted the NBA), the kind of scenario you would look back on and figured "hey we did a pretty good job in that draft." That said, with the players available, who would you have selected with each of those picks?

    ....just for giggles.

I would have taken Gilbert Arenas and Zach Randolph DEFINITELY. Maybe Tony Parker...and maybe Brendan Haywood. Gerald Wallace just for his dunking skills. Richard Jefferson...eh...yes I would picked him although no one really knew he was gonna be this good!

If we didn't trade for Eddie Griffin, I would have gone ahead with Richard Jefferson.

Then I would probably have selected Zach Randolph, or Brendan Haywood.

Or I would try to trade our other two draft picks for a future 1st rounder.

Just like adeel said, it would have been easy to say, oh yeah, we could pick up Tony Parker and so and so.

The thought that we could've had Zach Randolph makes me cringe. He is going to explode this season.

    Much like Eddie Griffin.

I think Eddie Griffin and Yao trump any combination of players you can come up with in hypothetical world.

I love how everybody assumes that we would still have Yao if we picked a perfect draft. The trade we made allowed us to lose enough games and get enough ping pong balls to land Yao Ming. The question is, would you rather have Yao and Eddie or Richard and Jason plus some other pick?

    I'll take Yao and Eddie.

Rudy was really high on T-Murph and Michael Bradley.

Yao Ming + Eddie is still better than any 3 from that draft. I'm happy with what we have.

    REMEMBER

Rudy wanted T Morris and said so after the draft. And traded a future 1st for him.

So we probably would have had RJ, T Mo, and 1 other.

I think that was the other draft when we had the 14th, 16th, and 18th pick.

I was okay with Michael Dickerson with the 14th.

I was even okay with Bryce Drew with the 16th pick.

Then we get to the 18th pick and we draft Bost...mirsad Turckan.

Also remember that the Rockets already had RJ on their team: his name was Shandon Anderson. Also, Mobley was a free agent and the Rockets weren't about to do any draft moves that might push Mobes further away (like drafting a 3/2 tweener).

I think the Rox may have gone with Murphy, Haywood and Morris--based on rumors at the time.
