Oh meant for draft evaluation purposes. I think Foreman will be very good back in the NFL but that'll be an area of concern when draft time comes along.
The eyes of the nation will be on USC and Texas next September. It's the ultimate chance for Herman to make a statement about his abilities as a coach and what this team is about. USC has bounced back this season so they'll likely go into it ranked #7-8 assuming they win their bowl and their two easy non-conf games to start 2017.
From Orangebloods - On Tom Herman *************** It’s possible this will be a story that is truly remembered as the start of the Tom Herman era As Herman walked down the center aisle of the team’s meeting room and took the podium, he announced to the entire team, "Sit the **** up.” There was silence. “I want your feet on the floor, shoulders back and your eyes on me," he said according to a source with knowledge of the meeting. According to our sourcing, roughly 75-80 percent of the team followed orders. Herman then reportedly repeated himself in a louder voice, “I said feet on the floor, shoulders back and eyes on me." All but one player in the room, a true freshman, followed orders. Herman then reportedly singled that player out in front of the entire room and said, "Son… what is your name?" From what we were told, the entire team had its collective eyes opened from the very moment Herman started speaking that there’s a new sheriff on the 40 Acres and if you don’t follow his orders, there’s no hiding from him.
Love reading this but think you hear similar things when new coaches come and try to set things straight. But I really hope Herman can toughen these guys up. As much talk as there was about Strong putting the T back into Texas, there were just so many games where I thought the team was just pushed around. And it seemed like the opposing team almost always scored on the opening drive versus us. To me, that just gives teams all the confidence that they could have their way with us.
It was more for the injured players but ya you really didn't hear much about after the first few weeks he got here.
Nah it was Pat Moorer's, Strong's S&C coach from UL. Would've really liked to see Texas go after Moffitt from LSU or Cochran from Bama. The size and strength these guys churn out year after year is incredible. Obviously recruiting has a lot to do with it. But they don't make a ton of money compared to other coaches yet they have the most contact with the students and are the ones that are allowed year-round contact IIRC.
Texas regent Alex Cranberg called previous guaranteed deals "disastrous and embarrassing." Herman's won't be fully guaranteed Another difference between Strong's and Herman's deals: Herman's buyout includes 100% mitigation. Strong had 50% Also: Herman is believed to be the first Texas coach ever to have a buyout owed the school if he leaves. $3MM per year, plus assistants. AUSTIN – Texas’ board of regents on Saturday approved a five-year contract for Tom Herman that will pay the Longhorns’ new football coach $5.25 million in his first year and a minimum of $25 million overall. According to a term sheet released by the university, Herman is scheduled to receive annual raises of $250,000 that will give him a salary of $6.25 million in the fifth year of the contract. But if he is fired without cause at any point, the school would owe him $5 million per year remaining on his deal. No state funds are used to pay for any salary in the UT athletic department, which is completely self-sufficient. “We got a great coach,” UT president Greg Fenves said. “(The contract) is very fair for Coach Herman and it’s fair to the university.” Herman, 41, will collect an extra $1 million payment if he is still the Longhorns’ coach on Dec. 25, 2019. Other potential bonuses include $100,000 for winning a Big 12 championship and $250,000 for winning a national title. His contract, approved unanimously by the board of regents, is believed to be the first to call for a UT coach to owe the school a lump-sum buyout if he leaves for another job. In that case, Herman would owe UT $3 million per year remaining on his contract, plus the salaries of any remaining assistants. Herman replaces Charlie Strong, whose entire five-year, $26 million contract was guaranteed when he signed it three years ago. Strong was fired last week after leading the Longhorns to a 16-21 record, and the Longhorns still owe him $10.4 million, although that amount will be reduced if he accepts another job. Herman, who led Houston to a 22-4 record in two seasons, also owes a $2.5 million payment to the Cougars for leaving that job. Fenves confirmed UT is in discussions with Houston about paying that buyout. http://blog.mysanantonio.com/longhorns/2016/12/ut-regents-approve-5-year-deal-for-herman/
Doesn't this just mean than another school could pay him $1 and UT would have to pay his whole salary? Seems like a 50% mitigation incentives the coach to try to still negotiate a good salary because he'd earn more money. 100% provides no incentive for the coach.
Uh oh, all the millenial high schoolers are now looking to OU. People don't even stand for the national anthem, who does Herman think he is? Lulz.
I may be wrong, but I think it's the opposite. In Herman's contract, the $1 would reduce how much UT owes him every year. In Strong's contract, only 50% of the $1 would reduce how much UT owes him each year. I think the reverse buyout is interesting...did UT get the sense that there is a greener pasture that Herman is potentially interested in? tOSU? NFL?
Yes I believe that is correct. The reverse buyout is just smarter contracting. Urban, Harbaugh, and Saban all have it and would just be dumb to not throw it in. The old regime not doing this was pure arrogance IMO.
Yeah, this is correct, but it creates an incorrect incentive. If I'm Herman and get fired, and another school comes calling, there's no incentive for me to negotiate a high salary. If UT is cutting my buyout by 100%, then if my salary is $1, UT will pay $5MM and I'll end up with $5MM. If my salary is $3MM, then UT will pay $2MM, and I'll end up with $5MM. If I'm going to come out the same either way, why not save my new employer some money? If I'm Charlie Strong, then if my new employer pays me $1, UT will pay $5MM and I'll end up with $5MM. But if my salary is $3MM, then UT will pay $3.5MM (only cutting $1.5MM), so my total net is $6.5MM. So I have incentive to negotiate a higher salary, which saves UT money.
