I was in the GARM forum and reading the never-ending "should have kept RJ instead of trading for EG" threads, when I saw slinslin comment:

I was thinking about the Suns drafting abilities. At first I was thinking that slinslin, being the eternal Suns diehard I assume he is from other threads, was just bashing the Rockets and overlooking his own team's weakness.

Then I thought about it a little longer. They drafted Marion in 99, the year we had to trade to get Stevie and the year we got KT. Last year they got Amare at #9 when we got Yao.

Now, instead of turning this into a Suns v. Rockets thread, I just wanted to ask out of mere curiosity: Who in the league has the best scouting and/or drafting ability?

I think the Suns have an excellent scouting team. Probably one of the best in the league, if not the best. They got Joe Johnson from Boston as well. I think that trade will end up working out for them very well. Boston seemed to give up on him too early, or else they just felt like they could get some immediate help for him.

Dallas did a fantastic job by drafting Nowitski. Recently the Suns have been the best by getting Marion and Amare in my opinion.

I would have to go with the suns. They have done very well in the draft with mid to late picks in the last 10 years or so. Even if they have not retained all of their picks they traded the players away for value. Beside Amare and Marion they have also drafted:

    Steve Nash
    Michael Finely
    Wesley Person

The Jazz. I know it hurts.

With mid-round picks they've tabbed Stockton, Malone, and Kirilenko... and all that in 15-20 years!

    It's a tough proposition.

Suns also drafted Jeff Hornacek and Cedric Ceballos in the 2nd round who were both allstars.

Also Dan Majerle, Jayson Williams, Stephen Jackson, Finley, Nash, Marion, Amare, Person...

I think the Suns are one of the league's greatest. Just seeing if there was any team I'd overlooked. As for the Jazz, I think they're up there, but definitely not the best. They've also tried DeShawn Stevenson, who is their EG without the 3 first round picks sacrifice. Suns have a much better track record in the draft, IMO. I'm surprised, however, that no one has mentioned the Spurs. The Gino/Parker loving must be dwindling (I personally think they're both overrated).

Orlando is one of the worst

Steven Hunter, Jeryl Sasser, Reece Gaines? LOL

Good thing they have enough picks they find someone every once in a while.

I agree with you guys, the Suns are the best drafting team in the NBA. The two guys they drafted this year, Barbosa and Cabarkapa, will be stars as well.

Suns got lucky with stoudemire and marion, but besides that, what the hell else have they done? Tsaklidis? Casey Jacobsen?

drafting 2 good players with high round picks makes you awesome?

This is the same front office that was ridiculed a year ago for trading kidd for marbury.

    ?

Sorry, but I think Marbury is doing just fine. Watch this season as the media gives him props for what he's been doing all along.

Oh, they got lucky with Stoudamire and Marion? Tsakilidis is a solid role player and Casey Jacobsen has been in the league one year. Do you have any idea what you're talking about. Please name 3 teams that are better in this area, expert.

Yeah, I do know what I'm talking about. Do you? Because I am pretty sure they just gave up on Tsaklidis and traded his ass for a bag of chips.

You want me to name teams that have done as good or better?

Sure. How about the nets, they landed two all stars in Kenyon Martin and Richard Jefferson in two years. Have marion or stoudemire ever made it?

How about Portland? Bonzi Wells and Zach Randolph weren't exactly first overall picks.

What about San Antonio, landing tony parker and ginobli with late picks.

    Your move, expert.

    Jazz.

They're one of the few teams who make you look twice at a player just because they draft him.

Amare was a steal at where he was selected. Tsaklidis was pretty good for where he was selected (25th). Marion was a steal for where he was selected(9th). Steve Nash was good for where he was selected(15th). Michael Finley was a steal for where he was selected(21st). Wesley person was good for where he was selected(23rd). Jayson Williams was good for where he was selected(21st).

I wouldn't say they were perfect, but they've have a pretty good track record(usually with pretty late picks) for a while now.
