The rumor is the games don't count until Oct. 28, when the regular season tips off.

Don't kid yourself. Already a few contentious matchups are unfolding.

Jeff Van Gundy vs. Steve Francis. Having received controlled, if not compelling, point-guard play in New York, new Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy is finding himself at loggerheads with Steve Francis.

"Steve offensively right now [is] trying to hit the home run every time down," Van Gundy said. "We're not playing team offense the right way. We're not adapting to change. There are a few pockets of resistance."

Francis is not exactly embracing all Yao all the time as Van Gundy's players in New York did when it came to Patrick Ewing.

"I've been playing the same way for five years," Francis said. "The part of me going one-on-one when the shot clock is going down, that's what I've got to do."

    ___________________________________________________________

Steve Francis: still selfish and not wanting to adapt w/ other players on the team. Why the hell doesn't he just sacrifice to help the team?

It's still the "I in team" thinking for Francis....

Those comments are taken out of context. This was discussed at length in another thread.

There may not be an "I" in team, but there is a "ME."

I hope that Steve will become less selfish as the season winds down. Like last year, he began focusing on passing and less on scoring as the season wound down. I guess once Bokie, Jackson, Mobley, and Pike; get their jumpers going, Steve will be more willing to pass the ball. Hell, even I wouldn't pass it to Bokie if he was shooting like he did in the first 3 quarters of the Kings game.

I really don't like the way that Steve has been using the picks thus far. There will be times that Yao will set a pick for Steve, but Steve will not use it; he'll just go in the other direction, why? Even when he does use the pick, he never seems to be looking for Yao for the roll.

    Drama builds well before tip-off

Rockets little league practice isn't going so well. New coach Jeff Van Gundy is particularly upset at his big hitter, Steve Francis, who is leading the league in home runs but is hitting a low percentage at .132 %

"Steve offensively right now [is] trying to hit the home run every time down," Van Gundy said.

One possibility of Steve's inabilities on the field could be that he has recently been reprimanded for being repeatedly late for class. He says he enjoys being tardy and admits being addicted to making class at the last second, seing it as a game.

"I've been playing the same way for five years," Francis said. "The part of me going one-on-one when the shot clock is going down, that's what I've got to do."

In addition, Van Gundy was especially angered when two of his players stepped up to plate at the same time and argued with the umpire.

"We're not playing team offense the right way." Van Gundy says.

One of the problems, he surmises, are the new team uniforms which some players are refusing to wear due to a mistake by the uniform makers. Some of the uniforms are reported to have misplaced stitches in some of the pockets, rendering them useless.

"We're not adapting to change. There are a few pockets of resistance." Van Gundy has commented.

Will this team drama prevent them from making the state semifinals again this year?

    yes, it does.

lord knows he need another Steve is selfish thread like we need the bubonic plaque.

besides the obvious spreading of out of context quotes that forget to mention that Francis was referring to playing hard when he said that about playing the same way for 5 years.

and VG came back the next day to clarify what he meant about the home run comment..

but the writer fails to include those parts..

    lock this puppy down please.

of course it's easy to take those quotes out of context add some spin to it and make a controversy that isn't there.
