Dean Gets Standing Ovation from Arab-Americans
Sat October 18, 2003 06:09 PM ET
By Tom Brown
DEARBORN, Mich. (Reuters) - Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean received a standing ovation from an Arab-American audience on Saturday when he attacked leading conservatives and figures from the religious right.

Dean, one of seven Democratic presidential candidates to address the Arab American Institute's national leadership conference in Dearborn, pointed to an American flag and named some of the people he said it did not belong to.

"It does not belong to General Boykin, or John Ashcroft, or Rush Limbaugh or Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson," the former Vermont governor said to cheers in the packed hotel conference room in the Detroit suburb which is home to one of the highest concentrations of Muslims and Arabs outside the Middle East.

"This flag belongs to every single American, including every single American in this room, and is the hope and aspiration for many other folks who are not yet citizens," he said

Absolutely stupid move by Dean, right or wrong the majority of Americans view Arabs/Muslims as Terrorist, and the absolute last thing Americans want is a Terrorist sympathizer in office.. There isn't enough of a Muslim vote in America to make up for the difference of the overwhelming majority that will be disgusted and repulsed by this display...

Karl Rove is going to have a field day with this footage, should Dean get the nomination.

You're joking, right? That's the most inspirational thing I've heard any of the Dem candidates say so far.

I agree, a lot of Americans are dumbasses. Bush and Rove play on that well and will continue to do so.

On the other hand, I love what Dean said. Right on the money!

Absolutely not.

Think World War 2 with the German Nazi's and Japaneese here.

Muslims are killing our boys overseas on a weekly basis, and killed 3000 Plus Americans on Sept 11th 2001.

The absolute LAST people in America you'd want to appeal to as a political candiate are Arab Americans.. It's Political Suicide.

I'd rather have a President who reaches out to *all* Americans, not just those who present the best photo opps.

Anyway, I don't think Americans are so stupid that they can't differentiate between Muslim Iraqi terrorists and Detroit-area Arab-Americans.

I think we all view Arab Americans with alot more extra suspicion in the post 9/11 world..

Calling for a release of Terrorist back on the streets of America isn't going to endear him to any of the thinking, voting public...

I don't at all. Everybody's different -- some are idiots and some aren't, and that can't be discerned by skin color, religion or home land.

But ignorance is definitely prevalent about Arab-Americans. The only way to challenge these stereotypes is to speak out. That's what Howard Dean is doing.

Sadly I don't. It wasn't that long ago during WWII when Japanese Americans were seen as the enemy and were interned for their "own good." Since 9/11 there has been hate crimes towards Arab Americans. There was one case that I saw in the news in which an Asian Indian was attacked because his assailant mistook him as a Arab Americans. Fear and hatred does strange things to you.

I agree with Murdock. While I applaude Mr. Dean's courage to reach out to all American, I don't think it is a prudent political move on his part.

Is it just last year when poll showed the majority of American think that Arab American shall be monitored (or something like that)?

im willing to vote for him if he realizes that being American has nothing to do with race or religion. Thats the most American thing that any of the candidates have said so far. He has my vote for saying that.

I think the more time that passes from 9/11 the more rational Americans will be about it. Obviously, Repubs looking for a reason to hate Dean can embrace this issue, but they weren't voting for Dean anyway. The real question is whether this issue has any traction with the independents, who are the swing vote in most elections. As an independent, I have no problem differentiating Arab Amercians (or Muslims in general) from terrorists. Thus, I do not have a problem with Dean's comments.

I hope he does. That would make great strides in unifying the Democratic Party.

That is NOT what Dean was doing. Dean singled out specific individuals and said that the flag does not belong to them. The implication that many will take from that is that these people are not American, or something to that effect.

Dean started to make a point, and then obliterated it by making a cheap shot against specific individuals.

He didn't say it didn't belong to them. His point was that it doesn't belong solely to them, but to all Americans, no matter what they're race or religion.

Didn't he just contradict himself?

This flag doesn't belong to John Ashcroft. It belongs to every American. So it does belong to Ashcroft.

It doesn't take a genius to note that he was implying that the flag doesn't belong to those people solely.

It apparently takes an idiot to think that's not what he meant though.

Of course, we are dealing with some people who believe that if you question this administration, you're anti-American, so it's kinda hard to deal with such rational folks.

Which is why Dean was courageous to try and tackle that kind of irrational ignorance. It's best to nip that kind of prejudice in the bud. I applaude Dean for the move. Hopefully most Americans aren't stuck on the kind of ignorant generalizations and irrational prejudice that you seem to believe they are.

Do you honestly think that politicians should let the ignorance and discrimination of thinking all Arabs, and Muslims are terrorists slide because it might not be politically smart?

If most Americans actually believe that kind of garbage, then a LEADER will lead them towards a more rational and accurate way of looking at things. Just letting the ignoring a population of Americans because some people are ignorant enough to label the whole group as terrorists is not what I want in a leader.
