What a cynical take on JVG. He kisses players' butts? JVG truly does care about these guys, you can tell from the comments he makes, and the way he grabbed onto Alonzo's Mourning's leg like a rabid chihuahua.
I usually like Charley Rosen's stuff because he does not seem to sugarcoat his opinion ever...but this piece really seems harsh.
Did you read that article? He says that every single offseason move made by every single team is a disaster waiting to happen. Is this a joke/satire piece?
People will continually bash JVG and the Rockets. As a fan, I like JVG's bottom line attitude: "No excuses." As long as we put up numbers in the W column on a consistent basis, I could care less what the so-called pundits like Rosen say.
typical fox news piece (of sh**). so many of their headlines over the past year have been as or more inciteful, i would be amazed if they ever got interviews with anyone. the reasoning behind the article is very "fair and balanced." yeesh.
Excerpt: That was one of the sh*ttiest articles I've ever read. All that guy does is put people down. I'm pissed that he even has a job.
From DavidS: And you use a cluless quote by a pontificating putz and found that as an open invitation to bash Rudy? DavidS, I wish this had been posted by one of the 10 year olds on this BBS and not you, because this ranks as one of the moronic posts I've seen. It's universally acknowledged Rudy considered his players to be like his family or his buddies, and let himself wide open for every sophomoric dumbass to pick up a verbal 2X4 and offer up some "tough love" stupidity. But let me ask you this: do you kiss your friends, butts? Do you suck up to your family? Do the people you love find you passive and permissive? That would be unusual. Most people land their most vicious haymakers on their best buds, knowing it won't matter. Most people put demands on their families, even if sometimes unrealistic, because everyone has basic needs from and hopes for them. Most people are very hard on the people they care for the most, because there's everything at stake in their lives. Rudy's rings coupled with his playing days make him a lock for the HOF. I can already hear the polite clapping that would draw here amongst hardcore Rox fans if he were enshrined today. It's ironic that life's hurled so much on a guy tough enough to take it and Rudy's regurgitated through the fan base as a mealy-mouthed simpleton who pushed a couple of correct buttons. Van Gundy's going to take more heat from the average fan than he'll ever deserve and I wish him the best. But the Rudy bashing must cease. Not because it's ignorant, not because you don't "get" him. Not because you're kicking a corpse of a thankfully alive man that can probably kick your ass on and off the court. Because it's just wrong. Until he leaves, which he has to, lay off the guy. He may have not been what this team needs now, but the cheap shots aren't even relevant. He's gone. We have Van Gundy and inevitable improvement with Yao. We bad soon. 6th seed in the West with 23 year old Yao. Wahoo.
declan: Right on the money! I would LOVE to hear the reactions from the Rocket players to this article. Based on what I've seen about their training camp and preseason so far, I have a feeling they would be more likely to use the words "chewing" or "kicking" to describe what JVG is doing with their butts.
i'm pretty good at letting things slide off my back. this guys comments, however, are so stupid that if i saw him out, rather than tryng to have an intelligent conversation, i would just have to take him to the wood shed.
With real friends, love is unconditional. Same with friendship. Do you think that "unconditional" is something you want in an NBA coach? I think not! What I was saying was that the article seemed more like it should have been written about Rudy (4 years with Francis), rather than JVG (after a few preseason games). Rudy leading a veteran team to two championships is celebrated. But that doesn't address the fact that he was unable to communicate with his young players. That he was unable to design an offense that wasn't iso-based. And that he was tooooo close to his players. Players that were young and impressionable but also would blindly go in the wrong direction to defend him, like you. His "friendship" with his players was one of the reason that he was unable to get his young players go grow. His "friendship" was also the reason that he was unwilling to say things to his players that would make them uncomfortable or angry. "Tough love" are the wrong words. It shouldn't even be a factor in regards to ones players. It's about the team and winning! The NBA is a professional team, not a "Leave it to Beaver" family. Although there might be mentorship and chemistry bonds that are created. In the end, it's about putting a winning team on the court. With families, you don't "trade them" in order to improve your "family." In the NBA you do. They say that "love is blind." Well, for an NBA coach, blindness will cause losing. Rudy just took it too far. He got too close, and got burned. So, if you want to be with your bud, go have a drink with him about the old times. It was a good 2 year run. Rudy is a nice guy. But, in the meantime the Rockets will be winning today. Yes, I'm a JVG and Yao fan. Feel free to bash them all you want. It's a Basketball BBS. Last time I checked this wasn't www.kumbaya.com.
'This pre sport journalist' reminds me of some kid that wrote in Dallas' newspaper last year that purposely just to bash Yao. Don't journalists have code of ethic...
Great post declan. You have said what a lot of us have felt about the Rudy bashers. Welcome to ignore davids.
Don't fret Rashmon. There's a bash JVG thread for your enjoyment... http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66247
