I have the normal pop up stopper that works well. But apparently I have some other type of virus-like crap running and now I get a popup every few minutes. Last night I ran a virus check before I went to sleep (no virus found)...when I woke up this morning my computer screen was filled with popups. How do I find the source on my computer so I can hopefully get rid of it. Thanks.
Download and run AdAware to get rid of any spywhere/pop-up programs. Then I suggest downloading Mozilla's Firebird stand alone web browser . It's a very efficient, fast browser that automatically blocks pop-ups except that you specify to allow them. It also offers tabbed browsing, which is simple yet incredible. You can also install "extensions" for it that allow you to do all sorts of things you only wish you could do with IE. You can read u about the extensions of the Firebird site.
I have ad aware. I'll run it again but I don't think that is the problem. I think there is some type of program on my drive that is running and I don't know where to find it. They'll pop up regardless of whether or not I'm in a browser.
Adware is good but SpyBot is better, search google for Spybot; install and run that program to get rid of imbedded pop-ups
I have spybot too. I'll run it. Ad Aware found four things but not the pop ups, which continue to pop up every few minutes. Dammit.
I had (have) the same problem. Whatever did it won't let me upgrade critical updates from microsoft. It tells me the signature of MS software I'm trying to install is invalid. I have to run Spybot at least once a day...
if you are on 2000 or XP you may getting hit through your Messenger Service. It was a program intended to Send and receive messages transmitted by a System administrator or by the Alerter service....BUT spammers have started using this to shoot pop ups to people. click on start, then settings, then control panel. double click on Administrative tool, then double click on Services. Right click on Messenger, select properties. Where it says "start up type" use the drop down to select Disabled. Click OK.
A. Stop looking at Pr0n. B. Buy a Mac. Seriously. Safari has a built in pop-up killer and Macs don't get viruses.
Should I look for something in my task manager? I don't know what is good and what is bad in there in the first place.
MOst of these programs, legal or illegal as they might be, can run without showing up in the task manager. You downloaded something that is "free" and with advertisements as tradeoffs. Leave your PC running and determine whether minimizing or closing a program makes the pop up come up, or if it is just timed. Leave your system clock program up to see if it is in intervals. Download AD-AWARE's updates so you have the latest list of bad software. Run AD AWARE's DEEP SCAN. Keep SPYBOT running at all times.
I would suggest that you download and install the google toolbar. It has a built in pop-up blocker and it integrates smoothly into Explorer. http://toolbar.google.com/
the google toolbar will only stop pop-ups that come up while browsing. Faos if you're not getting the messenger pop-ups that were described earlier, then it's probably just another advertising program that is embedded somewhere. I had this problem at home, but Ad-Aware took care of it.
