Apparently he hates Desis, at least according to the internet.

I was waiting on Panjabi MC to walk through the door and start rapping during that grocery story scene.

Off topic...did any of you growing up in Houston ever used to eat Antone's Po Boy subs? I remember way back when we used to get these somewhere. I can't quite remember the location. I just remember as a kid walking into a grocery-type store and they had them already made ready to go in their refrigerators and we used to pick up a few of them. It was like a ritual anytime we were in the area. I really used to like these subs. I never remembered but I assume they had a deli-style restaurant maybe connected to that store or elsewhere. Out of curiosity, I did a search and found that apparently they have two big restaurants now. I just remember that Big Mac-like special sauce they put on them. Does anyone still go there and eat these? I can't believe they are still around honestly.

I guess not good enough to be on Bourdain's show eh?

You can get those subs at Kroger, and pretty much everywhere else. They deliver their pre-made sandwiches to many stores. Even the store in my office building has them.

    HEB has them too.

I remember when I worked on Sabine my uncle would take me to the shop. I was on the street next to the KHOU 11 studio. It's a cheese and wine restaurant now.

Yea...I'm in the D/FW metroplex. I guess I was having withdrawals all of a sudden. This thread reminded me of what I was missing in Houston. I also miss the Tamales truck parked on the side of the road in Webster I think...not far from Clear Lake City. God forbid that Tamales truck is still parked there? They were good....greasy though. Anyone ever go there?

I was checking to see if I could get the Po Boys up here. The closest place I found people talking about is a Antoine's subs in Dallas @ Harry Hines. It sounds similar style but I think is completely unrelated to Antone's in Houston.

I may have to get a business deal with one of you In Houston to send me an allotment of Antone's Po Boys each week. "Yo...get your not-so-fresh Antone's Po Boys from Houston here!" lol

My understanding is the chowchow (the relish) on those Po Boys makes the bread go soggy fairly quickly....so they only stay fresh for the day they are made really.

Exactly. Customer service is the worst. I sat there for 10 minutes before someone came to take my lunch order (if you arrive in a group, you matter; if you arrive alone, you don't). Then the owner makes a comment when I paid, "Nothing for the service?" A**hole, your boy ignored me, and someone else brought me the food, plopped it down in front of me, and left. I don't think I even got a water refill. Here, take this dollar and that's the last time I'll be here.

To be honest, the food wasn't that great, but maybe their pre-fab lunches don't match something you might order off the menu. Which wasn't cooked last night and stuck into the fridge.

Yeah, I grew up eating those too. There's a location close by me that's still going strong. I read a while back that when they started selling to grocery stores, their popularity dropped & they had to close up most shops. Such a shame.

    Just watched this. Awesome episode.

Makes me wish in a way, I never left Houston at 15 and could have explored the city properly.

My wife doesn't want toove to the South, and I can't be two places at once.

I didn't realize Antones was a Houston thing. I used to eat at the one on Bellaire all the time. Tc jester and 610 as well. The supermarket ones are fine but when they make it fresh at the store it's obviously better. It's important that the bread has a little crunch still which you don't get from Krogers.

Just watched it. It was just ok

I know that Sunil Thakar dude personally. We used to be pretty close but he is an @$$hole.

Weird that most of the pictures and videos were around the hillcroft area, one of the shittiest areas of Houston.

Watching it right now. I have a quick story. It's a little embarrassing. It was a Friday afternoon, around 4:45. I heard there were electric type Pokemon, specifically, electrabuzz. So I'm walking around near the bayou, just underneath the Wortham Center. It's a pretty place with fountains and all that. A good place for 15 year old Latina girl to take a picture of herself and her court, or whatever that **** is called.

It turns out, the girl taking group photos for her quince is the same group they featured on the show.

Could have had my 15 minutes

is it really weird that one of the most ethnic and tastiest parts of town was featured on a show about food and an episode espousing ethnic diversity? surely you can figure it out.

I'm just glad he covered something other than Tex-Mex and BBQ. Did a great job of reflecting the other Houston, IMO.

Tell here we aren't the south!

Texas is as much southwest or midwest as south IMO
