http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/houston-texans/brock-osweiler-9867/ Brock osweiler is not owed 72 million dollars for 4 years. This is very basically double what he is guaranteed both monetarily and time considerations. His 3rd and 4th year are the most expensive and not guaranteed outside of signing bonuses. Even if he does become all our hopes and dreams desire, he'll get a reworked contract before he makes it to year 3. If he doesn't, it's 6 mil to cover the signing bonus. A hit but not devastating. Let's put it another way. Brock osweiler will make 72 mil off the Texans if he is AWESOME at QB. Osweiler is owed 72 million dollars. Myth: BUSTED! http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/report-broncos-offer-brock-osweiler-3-years-more-than-45-million/ John Elway is not a genius. John elway offered him "45 million". Similarly, as mentioned Bradford got 22 guaranteed. Likely the guaranteed money here was between 25-30 million. They made him a great offer. Texans wrote him a blank check, backed the money truck up to his house, made him the do not pass up this offer-offer. Desperation is a stinky cologne. But they won their man and if only a consolation prize at least the "McNair won't spend money" crowd has to sing a different tune. This goes without saying, Brock would probably look better in his 5th year in the same system. That ol easy Peasy kubiak wet dream where any backup QB can be successful in the short term. Having THAT defense and running game to lean on. Where anything the QB does is a bonus. Go check their record. Denver hasn't beaten anyone noteworthy. Texans probably the best team they faced. Gary Busey's steroid injected clone is a genius GM. Myth: BUSTED! Brock Osweiler is the only person to THROW A FUMBLE. Myth: CONFIRMED lol I don't care what anyone says. The ESPN-hates-Houston thing is real.
hahaha... Yeah. Probably. And he's going to get every opportunity to suck for another year and a half. Still, that's no reason for ignorance and revisionist history. All things considered, with all the WR, free agent money, etc. spent on making this offense play better....how does Rick Smith keep a job? George Godsey, we can't even get a scapegoat firing? FFS.... No scheme to get anyone open ever. No "Matchups" being taken advantage of. No player development. No consistency. No nothing. Damn. DAMN. Do....SOMETHING different. Please.
The major flop this off-season was ignoring the offensive line depth. It still befuddles me that we came into the season depending on a journeyman swing tackle like Clark knowing that Duane Brown was going to miss substantial time and the train wreck season that Newton had last year. Then couple that with letting both you're starting center and right guard walk and signing two meh replacements and expecting the line to gel is beyond asinine. At least they spent a high draft pick on a starting center, just unfortunate that he got hurt. This team continues to ignore that Duane Brown is on his last legs. We should have been developing his replacement over the last 2 or 3 years. We have seen what limited success Andrew Luck has had with a joke of an offensive line, what possible outcome could you expect from Brock. I don't think he is the answer at quarterback, but despite all the media's overblown 72M dollar man BS, we are only locked into him for two years and he was the best alternative available. He could still turn the corner and give us play better than Hoyer, Fitz, and all the other has beens we brought in over the years. We are set on defense (save linebacker), and at the offensive skill positions. Use FA and trades to re-build the offensive line quickly. The plan has to be a west coast offense and a solid defense, that can overshadow a mediocre QB, but you can't do it without winning the line of scrimmage. Screw building the OL through the draft, our window of opportunity is with this defense and will only last a couple of years.
They didn't; they signed two free agents, resigned Clark, and drafted Martin. Keep in mind, their two tackles are making a combined $15MM this year - there's only so much they could've done since they had to keep Brown on the active roster. I don't know about that... Wilfork, Cushing and Joseph are unlikely to be here next year - and other than Joseph, there are no replacements on the roster. And we have no idea what version of JJ Watt will show up. I think the defense is in trouble moving forward.
What do the offensive line stats show? Clearly their line can be better, and they've been hit hard with injuries. But alternatively, when you look up, it doesn't seem like the actual performance has been that bad. Running game has been solid. Brock doesn't seem to have been rushed, hit, sacked more than the average team. It's not the Cowboys line obviously in terms of performance, but it doesn't seem like it's as bad as it should be on paper.
The line is bad.... the QB is really bad.... the ownership is piss poor, the GM is incompetent and the head coach should be coaching a mid major in college.
Well, it does seem like they haven't been great. http://www.nfl.com/stats/categoryst...263-o=2&d-447263-p=1&d-447263-s=PASSING_QBHIT 4th worst in QB hurries. Not as bad on sacks - only 13 sacks thus far, so in the top third of the league there, but combine sacks and hurries and still in the bottom third of the league. Some of this still has to come down to the predictability of the offense. Defenses generally know what's coming, and have "given up" some mid field running game partly because they don't trust the Texans red zone offense or passing game. That is, defenses both know what's coming, and when not sure, especially in middle of the field, are "happy" to let the Texans run game pick up some yards to prevent bigger pass plays and the Texans offense from getting into a rhythm. Cause the only stat the Texans are good at is total rush yards/yards per rush. But even with that they're still dead last with just ONE rushing TD, and in bottom third on rushing first downs. Pretty simple blueprint on how to defend the Texans. So, relevant to this thread... I guess the o-line hasn't been good. It hasn't seemed horrible, and it isn't clear that the focus of the offensive putridness should be firstly on the o-line, but indeed it isn't good.
Houston Texans are fourth in the league in having hits on QB. I don't have the time to look at it game by game, but I would bet that the highest percentage of those hits were in the 3 road games. You don't address OL depth by replacing two starters with two other starters. Even if they played as well, our depth at tackle is horrible and guard questionable. I don't think it was a stretch to think we might have injury problems on the offensive line. In fact, my guess is that Duane Brown could have some more problems this year. What then? As far as the defense goes, I think we have done a great job at CB depth and the loss of Joseph won't be hard to swallow. Cushing needs to sit now, he is playing terrible. I bet Wilfork comes back, but we did draft for his replacement and Dunn has looked pretty good as well. Oh, and we do get WATT back.
