No incident or terrorist attack has ever happened to show that Trump was correct about any of the policies or ideas that he advocates.
He wants to make changes huh. Is that why when Bill O'Reilly tried to serve him soft balls on nuances on how to improve crime in urban communities the best he could come up with was "We have to toughen up in crime" You are a joke if you genuinely believe he cares. The dude has no clue what a solution would even look like.
The reason why Trump's tweet today received a ton of negative attention isn't his particular position on black communities, shootings or crime. It also isn't him trying to "capitalize on a tragedy." It's the fact that his very first reaction to someone dying is about himself (basically "I told you so") and it took him (or more accurately, somebody on his campaign staff) 3 hours after the initial statement to express condolences. People with human empathy and a sense of basic decency and decorum just don't act this way. A person can sincerely believe that a tragic death shows the need for a particular policy position that he/she advocates and use the opportunity to promote a political position. But a person with empathy won't make a policy argument or an election plead the first thing out of his/her mouth in response to a tragedy. Lots of politicians "capitalize on tragedies" if we think of them uncharitably. Trump is just particularly incompetent at this-- remember his first reaction after the Orlando shooting was also "I told you so!"
#1 Chicago has always had terrible segregation and racial violence. From the time of the great migration after the civil war, there have been race based violence and riots in Chicago. The Midwest is probably the least tolerant region of the USA. #2 Putting old gang leaders and members in prison decreased gang violence by 50%, it is one of the best decisions made by the Clinton administration. #3 Because Chicago is so racially segregated, the majority of residents don't really care what happens in places like Maywood and Englewood. Those areas are over 90% black and have been for a very long time. As a result those areas are an afterthought that are avoided at all costs by the other 80% of the city unless they are buying drugs. #4 The lack of integration in Chicago (a common Midwest problem) has resulted in most Chicago residents have little real interaction with blacks on a daily basis. They don't live in the same neighborhoods. They don't attend the same schools and don't work in the same offices. #5 Your point about Mexican cartels is valid to a point, but there are other hubs for drug transportation and distribution, plus violent crime was a problem in Chicago before the Mexican cartels moved in. #6 Also you can buy guns legally in Illinois and conceal carry. The overwhelming amount of guns used in violent crimes in Chicago are illegally obtained. #7 The hospitals in Chicago have become incredibly proficient at treating gun shot wounds, very few of those shot are actually fatal.
That's what alt-right republicans tell themselves - instead of realizing that blacks are voting for the one party that actually will do something for them they just think blacks are stupid sheep. And they wonder why they can't get minorities to vote for them!
A lot of Trump supporters are well off. This idea that Trump supporters are poor, toothless, uneducated white folks isn't accurate.
Exactly my thoughts. It comes off as him celebrating these deaths (this, the Orlando shooting, the Brussels attack). When something like this happens, nobody really cares whether or not you were right or wrong, it isn't about you. He is trying to become a leader, he needs to prove he can unite people and help taking steps towards fixing these issues.
http://www.npr.org/2016/05/24/479192873 Asian Americans---self-reliant, hard working, strong on family value, well-educated and fiscally conservative---would seem to be a natural for the GOP party. When Reagan was President, w the immigration amnesty laws in effect, a majority of Asian Americans voted for GOP candidates. In 1992, less than 1/3 of Asian-Americans voted for the Democratic Presidential candidate, Bill Clinton. But, this year, a clear majority seem to favor his wife Hillary Clinton. in terms of party identification, since 1992, no other group has shifted so dramatically against the GOP. According to a recent study by UC Riverside, exclusionary / xenophobic / anti-immigrant rhetoric by GOP candidates seems to be driving this political shift. More than 40 % of Asian-American voters surveyed said they would oppose a candidate — whom they otherwise agreed with on most issues — if he/she had anti-immigrant views. This was the reason that, in 2012, > 70% of the Asian-American voted to reject the anti-immigrant Presidential candidate, Romney. Most probably, in 2016, even worst for Trump. One can infer that, for the most part, AA voters are issues oriented, they're too savvy/pragmatic to be duped by the current GOP that it is the party of Ronald Reagan.
You are right, we all must bring attention to tragedies by capitalizing on them for our own gain! Obama should have gone to Louisiana and been there for press ops to secure his legacy and look good. So what if a few more people would have drowned. It would be better to let them die than to ignore them.
That's the archetypal Trump supporter that news channels highlight, but an article I read the other day I thought captured Trump supporters better: the downwardly mobile. I.e. the people who were raised with the idea of "being able to do anything" and being doing better in life than their parents, who now find themselves struggling to get through life if not outright doing worse off than their parents. Those are the people who want to "make America great again". My roommate isn't anything like that. His parents were firmly middle to upper-middle class and he and his siblings are a dentist, 2 doctors and a lawyer. That's the very ideal of upward mobility and counter to the idea that America isn't great anymore. He is, however, so type A that he doesn't understand when other people need assistance or support. He believes that his success is 100% a product of his own effort and nothing to do with a strong middle class background, values, or nuclear family support. He conveniently overlooks taking government assistance in the form of subsidized student loans or public tuition and firmly believes assistance programs reward laziness. Really he's drunken the alt-right koolaid. I'm a big social justice guy; so that number seems low to me, but yea that's pretty much it.
This is very key point. When politicians talk about things like doing away with citizenship at birth that really hits people like myself who were born to parents who at the time were only on temporary visas. Further if you study the history of anti-immigration in the US much of that was targeted at Asians. Much of the same rhetoric that you hear these days directed at Mexicans and Muslims has previously been directed at Asians. In the 19th C. Chinese immigrants were villified as taking jobs from Americans and depressing wages. They were also accused of bringing crime and drugs such as opium and prostitution. Japanese immigrants were villified as a fifth column against the US during World War II. When we hear about things like bans of immigrants or suspicion and surveillance of groups of immigrants we should remember that the Chinese immigration was banned for decades under the Exclusion Acts while Japanese immgrants were held in detention camps. Too many, including Asians themselves, buy into the idea of the model minority when forgetting that for most of US history Asians weren't considered that or treated that way. Further Asians weren't granted civil rights such as living where we wanted, marrying who we wanted, and working because we were quiet, hardworking and didn't cause but largely due to the Civil Rights movement that improved things for all minority groups including Asians.
The issue is Republican party doesnt empower minorities in a significantly embraceful way Analogy: If the Yankees are always good because they outspend everyone, because the system allows unlimited spending and they have the most money, Yankees are not going to change the system allowing imbalance (cuz why should they). Theyre going to basically tell small market teams "GET OFF Your ASS and be BETTER". Though will not actually do much to change their inherent advantage and reach across the aisle. Why because "WE Didnt Need That!" Which reads to others as "Not MY FAULT You're Small, DEAL With It!" The "Get Off Your Ass, I DID LOOK AT ME!" approach has limited effect. Its choosing the Darwinism belief that the playing field IS equal to everyone of all types, that everyone has the same Darwinian survival percentages. It can indirectly reinforce innate advantages & disadvantages already built in for certain people No its NOT necessarily "Racism". Its protectionism in maintaining advantage. Still, people/minorities CAN agree in that approach. Because yes in the END you HAVE to pick YOURSELF up because life isnt fair. And Welfarization might not be effective if it just leads to "Give Me Money" life. But people arent THAT dumb, they can sense inequalities even through all the preaching and politicizing.
im black and im voting for trump we are free to do as we choose, we are NOT forever slaves to the democratic party
Congrats!
