So I am getting the opportunity to listen to Robert Ford today. I like him a lot but I had never considered the fact posted earlier about him sounding like Kermit the frog when I listened to him in the past. On the Gattis home run he did not get super excited but I could see where someone might say that when he was really excited. His pitch raised a little and he did have a Kermit quality to him. That, however, does not diminish my opinion of him. I think he would be good on TV as a Bill Brown replacement.
Hernandez is such an improvement over Gomez. Did we ruin the season by waiting too long for Gomez's rekindling?
We definitely took way too much underproduction from Gomez and Rasmus but given their costs and acquisition costs, it's not surprising they got a long leash. I don't think anyone at any point thought Teo would be this good.
Kinda sad I picked up the Houston feed (though always like hearing/seeing Julia)... the Pittsburgh announcers were knowledgeable (even about the Astros) and seemed to know when to be quiet and just let the sounds of baseball go through). The only slightly annoying part was their overuse of the phrase "the 'Stros. But that is way less annoying than Ashby and his constant "flirting" with Julia about food.
Blum is pointing out issues with Springer's swing. Is the hitting coach seeing these things and trying to correct them or is Springer just stubborn and not listening to anyone to become a better hitter.
read this multiple times. I just don't get it. The kid was 23 years old, and in 2015 played terribly in his first full season in AA. In 2014, he had 23 games at AA with mediocre stats (.773 OPS) buoyed by a .418 BABIP, so it's not like he already tore it up. So coming into this year, he hadn't shown anything decent above A ball. In 2016, they gave him ~300 plate appearances at AA, and decided that was good enough for a promotion. That's fast given his struggles last year! Then he came up to the bigs after hitting great in AAA for only 160 PA's. It made sense to keep Gomez around through the first trade deadline at least to see if he could build any value, and it also made sense to give Tucker/White/Reed/Bregman a shot before Teoscar. In short, the timeline was fairly aggressive given what Teoscar had shown before this year. Maybe if you cut some time here and there, he could've been up ~2 weeks prior? I think far from a season-changer
Yeah, I don't think anyone would have anticipated Hernandez acclimating himself to the majors as quickly as he did. He's been a pleasant surprise, but a surprise nonetheless. Gomez was an unmitigated disaster, but I don't think there was really anything the Astros could have done from within the organization that would have pushed him out much earlier than when it happened (outside of a trade).
It's not as simple as "oh I'm doing it wrong, let me stop doing it wrong". Springer's got to work his way out of it.
Do they do this every game? I'm 9 out of 10 watching the other team's broadcast, so I dunno. Ashby definitely was taking notes from Milo on how to uncomfortably flirt with any female on the broadcast or who comes by the booth.
