180lb dude that's in great shape VS a 125lb (flyweight) professional MMA fighter: Who wins?

What about someone like Dwight Howard/Lebron James vs Connor McGregor?

 

Well Howard would have a 14 inch reach advantage and Lebron would have a 10 inch reach advantage, I'm not sure if any of them have any MMA training, but if they did, they'd destroy him. Like, any at all. McGregor has terrible cardio and relies on knockouts but he doesn't have knockout power outside of the 145 weight class. If you could teach Howard or Lebron to fight off the leg kicks, my money would be on them.

I've got bad news for you if you think because Conor didn't knock out a dude with one punch who is known for having a granite chin means he doesn't have power above 145lbs. Especially against non-professional fighters.

 

He's not knocking out a 260lb+ world class athlete with a 10-14 inch reach advantage over him. Honestly this is why I hate that they even added weight classes to the UFC to begin with, it gives people a false sense of reality and they forget the reason those weight classes exist. They exist because it's not fair pitting a little guy against a big guy when both know what they are doing. When we're talking about someone nearly twice as big, it's not fair even if they barely know what they are doing. I get that small guys want to have hope that they can be badasses too, and they can within limits, but you can't overcome biology when the difference is that extreme.

 

I think for the most part people understand this. This is why Mighty Mouse isn't doing too well as far as event promotion goes. The majority of people just aren't too excited about 5'3 fighters. Even though he might be the best pound for pound fighter in the world right now.

 

I was replying to your claim that McGegor has no power above 145. His last fight over Diaz, a dude who is nearly impossible to finish, shows he has more power than a lot of people previously thought. Who else at 155 or even at 170 knocks Nate down three times with punches in eight minutes?

 

Agreed. It may also explain why part of Ronda's popularity seemed partly because casual fans thought she might actually be able to beat or even compete with some dudes in the UFC.

Gotcha, I still think that he'd struggle at 170 to knock people out even if they were not as durable as Diaz but I get what you are saying.

This drunken street brawl between a guy who walks around at 180 and a college athlete who weighs in at 230 isn't quite the same as a fight between a guy at 140 and a 260lb+ world class athlete with a 10-14 inch reach advantage. Funny video though.

 

Possibly but I think he would have slightly above average power against true 170s. But he is clearly too small to fight at 170 where the extra weight kills his cardio.

 

it takes years of hard training to become a skilled technical fighter. - it takes about 3 months to get into good physical condition.

this isnt even a question... people assume just because your bigger means you can fight or something like that... fighting is an art and a science... being in good shape is one thing, but for a nobody to come fight a bonafied pro fighter would be suicide. i guarantee you a 125 pound prize fighter could smoke a jacked 300 pound body builder with little fighting experience...

but society has conditioned us to believe size= strength= automatically trumps ability. pure nonsense...

just like in in any sport, you garner power through kinetic energy and proper technique, not by having a giant bicep muscle... not to mention the fast reflexes and understanding your opponents body english in order to avoid being punched which take years to develop...

a good 125 pound boxer can probably throw 12 hard and accurate punches in 3 seconds without gloves...

these are 2 world champs going at it in round 5 in a fight? now put 1 of them fresh against a giant with no gloves... no chance.. and yes, those punches in the video do hurt.

they also are using what looks to be 16 ounce gloves and head gear... imagine no head gear and lighter gloves. shaq would probably be in trouble...
