He is in better shape than he was and will never be built like a lot of people hope, it isn't his genetics.

Good win. Would like to see Giles pitch a clean inning.

Really hoping we can make a push to catch the Mariners and/or Rangers.

Dallas friends are bragging that they're WS bound, and man, I would love for them to lose big.

Hopefully Gomez brings his bad juju to that team.

Than he was when? I get the impression he's just been extremely successful everywhere being overweight and that he thought he could continue that. Hope he shows up a little trimmer in the Spring.

I've been watching all the games and Reed looks good at first to me. He could have stretched out for that ball IMO. I don't know why people think he's a ****ty fielder or even slow.

Its weird. I kinda liked Ashby before we let him go 10 or 12 years ago. I was actually a little disappointed that Drayton wanted him gone. He seems so much worse now.

Robert Ford did the same mistake on the radio broadcast.

I kind of feel the same. I have to give him a little slack tonight though. The pressbox at the field in Pit is horrendous. When Bregman hit his homerun McCutcheon had me fooled too. He was running back like he was getting under it. When it went out I was surprised too. Other than this series though he has no excuses for generally being terrible. He's bad with names, bad with plays and nto extremely interesting on color. At least Blum is humorous.

The press box is a terrible vantage point.

It's been a while since Castor had a non-anti comment with that "brand new" poster.

I thought the Pirates announcers did the same thing too if I remember correctly, thinking it was a fly out. So I have to give him a pass instead of piling on.

Its almost impossible to judge fly balls from behind the plate. Pretty nuch all of them go off the swing and OF movement. Had me fooled too. Looked great off the bat. But it looked like McCutchen had it.

Yep, a lot of commentators who aren't used to (and even the Pirates ones) the press box at PNC park get fooled

Except he continued after McCutchen had his back turned watching.

Clearly they know it. TV guys said a fly ball towards McCutchen, looks up and its gone. Radio guys said McCutchen drifting back, looks up and its over his head into the seats.

The Astros radio guys were fooled too, but at least they didn't have to wait until the ball landed to realize it was gone.

So your issue is Ashby was fooled for a split second longer? Jeez, give the guy a break. Is it really that big a deal that he called a play wrong from a vantage point acknowledge by everyone as being awful then corrected himself?

No it's not a big deal at all. He also does it quite frequently even at home, which also really isn't a problem either. Even though I've made fun of him, it's not an issue I care about.

The problem is that he's just not very good at calling baseball games and this is something else to pile on top of that.

If it was an isolated incident, that's fine.

He makes mistakes similar to this nearly every game. Its comical that he thinks a lot of fly balls are HR's off the bat... and this was an example of him making the exact opposite mistake.

He's not performing some high-risk/complicated task that is prone to lots of errors... he's announcing baseball games for a living. He's not good at it.
