http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=1633606 Associated Press CALGARY, Alberta -- Jarome Iginla became the first black captain in NHL history Wednesday when the talented forward was tabbed to wear the 'C' by the Calgary Flames. Iginla "I have been very lucky to have played with many great captains that I have learned from over the course of my career," Iginla said in a statement. "I believe I am better prepared to assume this role as a result of playing with players such as Craig Conroy and Dave Lowry. I'm ready for the next challenge and the responsibilities that go with it." Conroy, Iginla's linemate, served as Flames captain the past two seasons. Conroy and defenseman Robyn Regehr will be alternate captains. "Jarome and I have discussed his eventual captaincy of this organization for some time now," Conroy said. "I strongly believe that he has all the qualities of the leader required to bring our club to the next level. "If I had any sense from Jarome that he was not ready, I was prepared to remain as team captain but there is no doubt in my mind that at 26 years old he is prepared to assume the role." Iginla is entering his eighth NHL season. He won the NHL scoring title in the 2001-2002 season as well as an Olympic gold medal with Canada at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. "Jarome is a quality young man and a terrific hockey player who people look up to," Flames head coach and general manager Darryl Sutter said. "His work ethic and commitment to being the best are examples of how all players should prepare and compete. "I commend Craig Conroy on recognizing that the time was right for Jarome to take on a greater role as a leader and for making his team's success the highest priority." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Before you ask "NO" I do not think that all NHL teams are racist for not having one. SHEESH!
Perhaps. But we've yet to receive ample opportunity for full-on debate in regard to this topic. I'll start: EDIT.
Ditto.... Okay, so maybe you don't share my sense of humor, but at least I tried. I'll go back to posting numb drivel.
speaking of gay, I was watching playmakers the other day, and I guess they now have a gay player on the team trying to hide his sexuality. Has anyone else seen this?
As a matter of fact though, whilst we're derailing AB's thread here; I will go on to say: It really angers me when other people cannot accept things that society says are taboo as things that some people regard transversely. If a comment about "gays" in the wrong context offends you, it is, to me at least, you defending something that in most societal circles is considered just as taboo as the comment you derive offense from. If you can accept concepts like that, then - to me - you should be able to accept the humor that is sometimes used in inverse conjunction with it. And if it's the graphic depictions that so easily come with gay jokes which bring you to such repulsion, then maybe you should label this: http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=65948 Or this: http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=65900 Or this: http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&postid=1064022#post1064022 Among your "worst post" list.
Not that its relivant... Iginla's a great player and worthy of being captain. Didn't realize he was the first black player to be captain, although i guess with the relatively few black players in the league, it's not surprising.
Why is this in the D&D? I mean, who could possibly have a reason to disagree with Iginla becoming captain?
Oh the irony! Now you know how the majority feel about speaking their mind on racial issues in everyday life!
Is this sarcasm? If not, believe it or not there are idiots who believe hockey is the only sport where white people have a chance to be the stars and even then they get mad because they say "black people take over everything, football, basketball, baseball...what do we got left, hockey and horse racing?" There are black and white stars in each sport it and people who try to make it look like one race dominates a sport over another is just pathetic.
Yeah, I mean since we're buying the majority of the tickets, we should at least keep all the head coaching jobs and most of the captain positions in the NHL.
You guys have made that abundantly clear. Problem is YOU guys don't get flamed because you are always right. I, on the other hand, overreact (or so I'm led to believe).
AB, Free country - you are allowed to express yourself however you like. But, if you do it in a public place, you are open to ridicule. In this forum...WE ALL HAVE A MICROPHONE !! DD
No sarcasm on my part. I'm totally serious, this is a historic moment. I'm not saying people need to stop what they're doing and celebrate or take it all in, I'm just curious how something like this can be seen in any kind of negative light? But, then again, I read an article about 2 years ago in ESPN the mag about black NHL'ers and how they still get called the n word from some opponents and by people in the stands. Congrats to Jerome for being the first and hopefully not the last.
