I think his Zoot Suits would distract everyone playing, hey, not a bad idea we need distraction to win.:D

I was just maintaining that he was no fool on the court. Everyone that thinks he "couldn't stop laughing" if he were coach is just misguided. I am not saying he would make a good coach, I am just saying that being a clown is not a valid reason why he wouldn't.

If I am going with your theory of "dedicated to the organization", I am reminded of a certain 6'11" center who was dedicated to the organization for 17 years, but decided that the traffic was better in Toronto...

Or, a dedicated coach who once got us two championships, and decided [or maybe someone decided it for him?] that it was time to stop coaching...

I love these two examples, but I don't agree with your theory.

That fellow has no interest in coaching, while Murphy presumably has at least a little. Mario Elie is a better example of a guy who definitely has interest, but is handicapped by lack of experience.

No doubt. Blame Les for firing the better man in favor of a Yankee with no ties to the city or the organization.

some of you guys are completely clueless about calvin. i don't know if he would make a good coach or not but he's far from some comedic sideact.

    No way.

Love the guy as a shooting guard. But not as a coach. He's wishy-washy. He'll yell out, "Oh, that's a bad shot!" Then, when the ball goes in....he'll say,"Oh, wait! I meant to say was...Good shot!"

Bill Worrell calls him out time and time again on the air. Once he notices that Calvin starts pouting. Only then does Bill lets up.

    1st of all. . .

Bill and Calvin are the greatest announcers ever in any sport. Only if you could hear the announcers other teams have. They feel like they have to comment on every single breath a guy takes and then analyze it. Ours are funny, entertaining AND they really really know basketball and the rockets.

Now as far as Calvin being a coach, he would be great at it. Just because he jokes around and eats cookies while broadcasting does in no way mean he would do that while coaching. Anyone who has heard Calvin speak to crowds knows he is very inspirational and can become so serious that you can't even recognize him as the guy who is doing the rocket games.

If you want to have boring announcers, watch a game on NBA TV, see how long it takes you during the first quarter to hit mute, and then thank god you have Bill and Calvin.

He would have to be an assistant first, and who could handle the flamboyant CM as an assistant??

I think he has the skills, but it probably won't happen.

Maybe a WNBA team can give Murph the chance.

Murph sometimes says things without thinking first. Worrell commented on one of the players in the Sonics game majored in petroleum engineering or something to that effect. Murph blurted out "Maybe he's learning how to make explosives" and laughed. Worrell quickly corrected him saying it's not good to say that in these times.

Les tried to fire Murph once, rehired him because of public backlash. Les must be thinking of the same phrase I think of whenever Murph is brought up: "Free Ride".

It's hard to imagine Murph giving up his announcing job (he loves it too much!) to become a coach, especially an assistant coach. And it's hard to imagine him ever getting a "good" coaching offer without being an assistant first.

That said, I agree with whoever said Mike Newlin would be a good coach -- except he'd have to have the right set of players. I just can't see him having enough patience with a lot of today's players. One thing about being a successful coach is that you have to be able to identify who needs coaxing & cajoling and who needs butt-chewing, and be able to both well.

"Anyone in here ever considered implanting a bionic knee into Ralph Sampson so he can play with the Rockets right away?"

Think this is outrageous? The person who started this thread is probably thinking along the same path...
