The fans will not turn on Watt. He's proven that he's a warrior. Everyone knows this guy has heart and gives everything he's got.

Changes in the front office will have to be made if it's a bad year. They can't use this as an excuse

    Schefter:

This is a situation here where J.J. Watt played last season with a herniated disc in his back. Clearly something happened here in the last couple of weeks that aggravated that injury and caused him to have that surgery right before training camp. Texans are optimistic he'll be back at the start of the regular season. I'm not sure it's a sure thing but they're optimistic that will be the case. He's never missed a regular season game. ... He's played through pain before. They're confident he can do it again but backs are serious. ... Today, they're optimistic he'll be ready but the season is now about 7-8 weeks away. We'll see how he recovers in that time.

    _____________

    Aaron Wilson:

    How surprised were you?

It was surprising. J.J.'s had a good spring & summer and then had a setback. Backs can be tricky. He played with the herniated disc last year. It's a situation where the worst case scenario is he misses the opener. Best case is he's back for the first game after rehab. At some point, they may want to look for a depth signing but for now, no immediate plan. Not a great list out there. (Jeremy Mincey - had a conversation with him in the offseason) They're not in panic mode. He'll play this year & be himself at some point. The big question is what is he like in the first couple games he's back.

    A) Time of procedure, B) when did it come into play & C) why not earlier?

We don't have a lot of details. This cropped up recently & addressed medically in the last few days. It's not something that they could have been proactive about. Most will tell you if you don't need back surgery, don't do it. What you can find with this, sometimes it's a playable thing & other times you have to address. It gets to a point where you're having a lot of pain, lack of mobility & flexibility & can affect everything you do. Better now than trying to fight through it in camp.

He's very, very proud he plays through pain. Sometimes you play with pain & overcompensate. If something aches him or a tear or a bruise or a broken, that maybe trying to overcompensate for that & play isn't always the best thing. If this back will continue to haunt him, because once you have back problems, you always have it, that maybe he'll be not so insistent on trying to play every week?

This is how he's come accustomed to doing it. Answer the bell every week. He prides himself on the iron man approach. They'll have to think about his snap count. He only knows one way: all out. That's what makes him J.J. Watt. The workload he takes, he practices a lot. That's great but he knows no other way & I don't know if he'll adjust. You talked about overcompensating, he had these core injuries that required surgery. He had a back issue...it all works together. ... This is a guy that is able to overcome & plays through injuries. That said, everyone has their limits. Backs are tricky. Now he has a back problem. ... His prognosis is good now but he'll need great rehab & not another setback.

    DL?

Plenty of Devon Still on the right side. Covington, Dunn, Pagan as well. They'll get their chances. Front-runners to start at RE is Still & Covington. They have upside. Now you're down 1 starter in Watt & trying to plug in for Crick. Tough situation. You're short-handed but it is preseason. Maybe they improve with extra reps & snaps. You're missing J.J. Watt. More pressure on Clowney & Mercilus. Last thing they can afford is for Clowney to miss time. Interesting to see if they do try Clowney, who is heavier this year not in a bad way but put on muscle(275-280), to put his hand down more and play end. He's not the body type for a 3-4 end, more 4-3.

    Crennel comfortable doing that?

That's something they have to explore. You wouldn't want to do it long term but Clowney, he's in a 3-point stance the majority of the time.

    Duane Brown's status?

When you look at Duane, this is a major injury & had it late in the season. He's had good rehab. He's been adamant, going all the way back in April, that he's on schedule for the first game. Some of the other guys have said we're not quite sure, we don't know exactly when. No one has said he'll miss the first game. It's a good thing they have Chris Clark. They're a little vulnerable. What will he be like because he has rust to knock off. Other than J.J., Duane's injury is the one to watch. Then two corners coming off surgery. Kevin Johnston had wrist & foot surgery. He was running in the spring. He says he'll be full go for camp. Same for Joseph. He won't play preseason football, same for Wilfork. There are some injuries that bear watching on defense.

    _____________

Another 'source': After groin surgery, he was having lingering leg pain they thought was associated with the groin surgery but instead was associated with the disc & was starting to limit his mobility.

He should miss the first 3 games of the season if you does not then he could throw his back out again then would miss the rest of the season. Better safe then sorry

I wouldn't be so quick to believe any media outlet reporting a quick recovery for JJ. they have every incentive to market a fast recovery for sales alone.

Pushed training in the summer--> torn core muscles early in season -->keeps playing--> disc herniation

So that's what he gets for not knowing when to tone it down.. Probably kept pushing it this off season so the disc started acting up ...

Spoke to a doctor that has some info on the Watt situation. He painted a much more pessimistic picture than I had in my mind. I had to actually stop discussing it bc I really don't want to hear anything negative...but let's just say we'll be lucky if he can play more than half the games next season (and hopefully no issues beyond 2016). I always have faith in JJ, so I'll just remain optimistic that he'll be good to go by week 1 or 2.

This is basically what the doc told me. The issue with Watts recovery is that he goes 100% all the time. He's not going to recover well when he pushes himself as hard as he does. It's a recipe for disaster.

JJ Watt fears no stinking back surgery, he spits in the face of longer than expected rehab time. Word is, he was already doing self-rehab in the recovery room, and they had to fly in 3 of the top Anesthesiologist in the world to finally put him under.

Seriously though, it sucks. I really think that he will recover on time, and put in the work to come back just as strong, that's just the way he rolls.

As in you think they overworked him? Probably so, but reading about Watt's desire to play it sounds like the team would've had to lock him out of the stadium to keep him from suiting up. If he said he was good to go, and the team is chasing playoffs, they were gonna let him play. The offensive sets definitely could've been minimized.
