I'm in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia right now for work. How worried should I be?

    ---

The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia said on Thursday it had received reports of a "potential, imminent threat" against U.S. citizens in areas of the city of Jeddah frequented by Westerners.

The notice on the embassy's website provided no other details.

"It’s a security message, not a travel warning, that our consulate put out in Jeddah. Obviously, our consulate felt that the information they had was credible enough, serious enough to warrant sending that message out immediately," State Department spokesman John Kirby told a briefing.

"There is a potential specific threat to Americans traveling to Jeddah, and in particular, public venues in Jeddah," Kirby said. "So it's very specific to the location and it makes it clear that this is a potential threat to Americans there."

On July 4, a suicide bomber was killed and two people were wounded in a blast near the U.S. consulate in Jeddah. It was the first bombing in years to attempt to target foreigners in the kingdom.

The same day, a suicide bomber detonated a bomb near the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, Islam's second-holiest site, killing four security officers. A third attack took place in the eastern city of Qatif, home to many members of the country's Shi'ite Muslim minority.

I think you should get out. This sounds serious. Stay safe. Not worth it.

Do you get time off that you can use for situations like this, or are you in the middle of projects or ongoing assignments? If it's the latter I would just stock up on rations and hole up in your apartment during weekends and evenings.

No job irrespective of how many $$ is worth your life.

I would GTFO ASAP and tell your boss to STFU if he asks why you're AWOL

I'm typically at the client site in Jeddah for two weeks at a time, followed by one week back home in the US (or I can use that one week off to fly pretty much anywhere else in the world as long as airfare is comparable to what it would cost to go back home - which is pretty much anywhere, given that I'm already on the other side of the world).

During my week off in the US, I'm not expected to work remotely, so it's essentially like a free week of paid vacation. And then back in Jeddah for another two weeks.

    Repeat.

I've been doing this for the past 10 months.

    Benghazi?

You are in a foreign country, on the other side of the world.... in a country stuck in the 1200's and you will stick out like a sore thumb. Time to get out. I also have to think that if "something" did happen to you, it would not be short and painless.

Seems reasonable to get out of there until the warning is removed. If this is any big company, it's probably an easy decision for them.

Honestly, probably no one here can be a better judge of how safe you are than you can be. Hate to advise you to get out, only for you to get blown up at the airport.
