    Rockets summary

    Yao sits
Rockets center Yao Ming did not dress for Tuesday's game and is expected to be held out of tonight's game at Seattle. But Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said he hoped to get Yao enough practice time on the road trip to return Yao to the rotation by Friday's game in Little Rock, Ark.

"Coming in late, with two practices, with a back-to-back set, I felt like I wanted to catch him up with his own little practice (Wednesday) with a few other guys to try to get him up to speed and then practice with the team on the 9th to be ready to play on the 10th," Van Gundy said.

    Queasy rider
With the Rockets' preseason opener, Jeff Van Gundy coached a game for the first time in 20 months. But it did not take the

tipoff to feel differently than he ever did as a television commentator.

"It's a totally different life," he said 90 minutes before the tip, already feeling the excitement. "It's night and day. I remember great things. I also remember the pit in your stomach that makes you feel like you want to throw up."

Asked how he felt even before the team's warm-ups, Van Gundy said, "Both."

I like the idea of Yao taking tonight off as well. It will give him some time to get it all together before he goes out there and gets scrutinized by every shot/move he takes.

Resting Yao is a good idea IMO. Giving Moochie, Nachbar, Meech, Cornell, Wilks, Scales and even Cato all of the minutes they need to prove if they can get with the new program is a good idea.

Great, should give the other bigmen more playing time to prove themselves. While Yao can get some much needed rest. Just hope he plays friday or sunday.

More rest for Yao is a good thing. Hopefully, we get to see him play a couple of last preseason game, to warm himself up before the real season kicks in.

Geez, this is just like last season...

They're babying Yao too much. 15 minutes of action won't kill him tonight...

Yao needs to sleep for about 48 hours straight. Then work him in. :D

it was quite obvious that the team had no direction last night without Yao. Cato tried to post up in order to simulate him as much as possible. If Yao's not playing, and Steve and Cat don't iso (which they didnt do last night), then its lookin like another really ugly game.

Are you kidding? Yao doesn't have an offseason...meaning he has no rest. I could careless if he plays in the preseason games...as long as he's fresh when the season starts (he should practice some of course, just to get in the flow of the new system.

    hehe...Interesting trend here:

When a poster agrees with another poster's comments, a number of people seem to follow & the opinion goes one way until someone disagree with him, then conversation headed in a different direction with everyone agreees with the new opinion...

Not exactly like last season...JVG held a practice focused on Yao on the morning of the POR game. 15 minutes of hammering Calvin Booth, Vitaly Potapenko and Mikki Moore IMO is less important than Sunday vs Magliore and the following SAC back to backs facing Brad Miller and Vlade. My guess is about 28 minutes vs Nesterovic and the Spurs.

Yao isn't playing? looks like another ugly night for the 3rd stringers but yao needs to play in a preseason game just to get the feel of the offense because practice doesn't simulate actual games. For tonight's game I predict 40 turnovers with 9 assist.

It's dissapointing that both Yao and Taylor are out at the same time. Seemed to me last night that Van Gundy was trying to run the offense from the post. Cato and Eddie were getting a lot of touches early in the game. As hard as Cato and Eddie worked last night, they just don't have the post up game that Yao and Mo have. I can't wait to see what the offense will look like once those two return.

    Really?

I had an interesting thought this morning.

In 4 years time, say, is it better for Yao to apply for US citizenship? By then he would have paid all his dues to Chinese Sports Ministry and very accustomed to US life style.

It does him, NBA or basketball sport in general no good to play 12 months a year.

He will have to choose either settle down in US or China or the poor dude will burn out
