This has probably been posted on here or mentioned on here lots of times when rudy resigned, but i wasnt here during that time to see what u folks said. But did anyone in here ever cosidered giving Calvin Murphy a shot at being head coach of the Rockets. I know he has been doing a lot of broadcasts for the Rockets so if anyone knows the rockets by heart its him since he watches just about every game. JVG is the coach but did anyone in here ever considered giving Calvin as coach?

It's hard to eat cookies and coach at the same time.

Maybe some people that have been around since the past off-season should respond....

To answer your question, yes, the idea has been proposed on this BBS in the past. Of course it was just idle discussion, and no one on this board is in any position in any way to act on it, and it's not exactly something many people would seriously consider.

That said, most people accept that Calvin has a very high basketball IQ, and that he would probably be capable of coaching the team.

But why? We have Jeff Van Gundy.

    I think we're doing okay.

I would say that Calvin is more than capable of coaching. He would just need to surround himself with the right people and a chance.

Mattress Mac has considered this. (Geez. I haven't lived in Houston in 9 years and somehow I'm reminding people about ads from the Houston Chronicle?)

Dude, do you even _watch_ the games??? Calvin Murphy's the comic relief during games, not the basketball commentary. Usually, he's eating pizza or cookies instead of commentating while he makes the other guy has to call the game. A few years back, he was charged with clocking himself in at one of his other jobs when he was supposed to be commentating. He's lazy and irresponsible, and I don't want him as our coach.

I guess im in the minority, but I think Calvin would have made a perfect coach.

During games he often is able to pick out exactly what the Rocket's are doing wrong. How many times has he described perfectly what the Rocket's are doing wrong? As coach he would be able to express this to them so that it could be corrected.

The man is a basketball genius. Alot of you underestimate him because he is humorous during the TV broadcasts.

I've made that argument before, but just in conversations with friends. I've always said that Calvin, and Mike Newlin would be good coaches.

You just answered your own question ;)

More seriously, I would say consider Calvin as an option when/if the JVG experiment fails. He knows the game, and is dedicated to the organization.

However, to make it work, Calvin would need to put in the legwork NOW. Give up the cushy broadcast job, maybe do the assistant coach thing, scout, or at least have RT show him everything the job entails for a full year. That isn't going to happen, so the point is moot.

Anything that gets him out of the broadcast booth is fine with me.

I guess you guys that are calling Calvin Murphy a clown that would not be serious as a coach has never seen him play. He was a fierce competitor. He was in Sports Illustrated as on of the leagues "Enforcers". You guys are way off base. Murf is a fighter. Pure and simple. No one wanted to get into it with Calvin Murphy in the day. I promise you.

Well, multiple NBA teams have already considered him for coach, but gosh darnett, he seems to prefer having the sweetest job in the world as opposed to the one with the least job security...

i have indeed seen calvin play, used to love him, but he was a one-dimensional player. besides, being a good player does not a good coach make. also, much of his "analysis" borders on lunacy. but yes, he was a tough SOB.
