Like most players on the Rockets team over the past few years. Offense improved (at least shooting %), D regressed. Brewer is the exception. Everything regressed.

He did get blown by at times but what player doesn't. I think he's a little overrated defensively but to say he's below average is absurd.

So he held Curry to 6 points in one game? Damn, that's elite Defense.

I knew Face guarding Curry 94 ft from the basketball would stop him

According to ESPN Defensive RPM, Beverly was #5 in Point Guards (#4 among starters) CP3 and Rubio 1 and 2, confirming "eye test"

    http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/rpm/_/sort/DRPM/position/1

Last season was crappy to judge defense by. Beverley has regressed past couple years in D but I dont think he's dreadful

    He's still very good.

Of course defense is a team game, so if your teammates are just standing there not moving then it makes your job harder.

I think he was a top 3 defensive PG in his first year, but then the injuries have taken their toll. He's still good at getting in some player's minds but it doesn't work on everyone. His quickness is almost gone so the 94 feet thing doesn't really lead to much anymore. I'd put him at number 30 in the league defensively based on last year.

The good news is that he's a much much better 3 point shooter now. That 40% he rocked is pretty legit. He was shooting four and a half a game so they went in for him.

He's also lost his FT stroke and he would help the team if he got it back. It used to be almost automatic for him, but last year he was at 68%.

I basically think he's overrated defensively, but underrated as an overall player.

Number 30 among PGs or number 30 overall? Let's just gran random numbers out of a hat without giving any reasons or comparisons.

Bev is more of a pest than elite defensive PG. He's no GP (Gary Payton)or anything like that.

He is still effective. Last year's team was a clown show, though and Beverley couldn't have save it. On this team, he is a pretty valuable part making a more than reasonable salary considering what the likes of DJ Augustin, Garrett Temple and Matthew Dellavadova are making.

I wonder, however, that if we are going to have a 3-and-D guy in the back-court with Harden, whether we are better off just putting an athletic wing player like Miami's Josh Richardson there. We've seen good wing defenders do well against some of the quick PGs by leveraging their size. Having a bigger guy also helps with matching up and switching.

Not every team can afford do this, but on a team with Harden, it can work. After all, we treat Beverley as mostly a spot-up shooter anyway.

He's a pest. Doesn't make him an elite defender in my book. But then again our whole team sucked a$$ last year, not sure if it was due to lack of motivation or just the lack of team chemistry.

Hopefully they'll start talking on that end too.

He gets in guys heads or at least tries to. The problem is it makes some people play harder lol

I like it and it's an interesting question. Especially, whenever the PG market is as depleted as it is. I think it goes without saying that Bev is best suited coming off of the bench. There's nobody left via free agency that we could acquire and push Bev to the bench, so unless this upgrade is happening via trade this isn't a bad idea to consider.

Bonus points if this player can defend either guard spot. If that were the case we could essentially do the T-Mac/Battier thing where Battier takes the more difficult 2/3 matchup and T-Mac (Harden) takes the easier one. Whenever people were mentioning Courtney Lee's name before free agency started, this was always the scenario I envisioned.

Mario Chambers is still available I believe. He's better than Bev on both ends of the floor. If we signed him he should easily push Bev to the bench.

Chalmers is not better offensively. He has a bad shot.

Chalmers is the better offensive player. The difference in their shooting, which is small, does not offset the difference in their ability to penetrate, finish, draw fouls, and dish. Chalmers is the superior player on both ends of the floor.
