That's not too bad, I would barely call it poison pill, especially with the salary cap.

But can the Spurs even match the $5.6m? Boban is just a 1yr player, so they don't have Early Bird rights to use.

And as far as a mid-level exception goes, I thought they lost that by going under the cap to pay Gasol, which means they'd need capspace to match Boban? But I could be wrong.

Don't get me wrong. Pau >> Boban, even at their respective ages.

Just think Boban will improve a bit and would give Pop interesting piece come playoff time especially.

He is a SUPER ROLE player. Those are the kinds of players we need. Who cares about the money? It is not coming out of our pockets. We go star ****ing and forget about the role players.

I think you're right on no bird rights, and since mini poison pill and Dedmon signing (w/ Gasol), might not need as much. However.. I do know a lot of Spurs fans are frustrated, I hear this guy has a lot of upside.

Yes, Houston really should be in on some of these deals... This is nothing in terms of today's contracts, just another oversight...

I heard this guy could be a decent player/starter or more, but we'll see. I'd certainly prefer him over Nene

Looks like it might not be the mini-Poison Pill, but rather the Spurs just don't have enough capspace to match the first year $5.6m. For some reason I was thinking Boban was a 2yr player, so SAS could match anything with Early Bird exception.

But since he is only a 1st yr player, he doesn't have that Early Bird exception, so SAS needs $5.6m in capspace to match. I'm pretty sure they lost their mid-level exception when they traded Boris Diaw and went under the cap to get Gasol, so this might be purely not enough cap room to match the $5.6m

Smart move wish the Rockets would have tried to pry him away.

This is essentially an MLE deal. The Rockets potentially have a plan for their current cap space because they've used an exception amount for Nene.

If they have a deal or potential deals lined up to execute then it is possible they couldn't even offer Boban this, limited to only the 2.9 million room exception that Nene accepted. Boban clearly wanted more than that.

Yeah, and he seems absolutely NOT like a MDA type player, to boot.
I mean, Nene can't shoot but damn can the guy pass.

His cap figure is $6.3m. How they go about getting him to retire, such that the league removes his cap figure all within 3-days, not sure.

Also, looks like they could dump all their non-guaranteed contracts plus all their cap holds except for Bojan, Manu and their 1st round pick this year (Dejounte Murray) and clear enough room...but that's 8 players, two of which are euro stash picks from previous drafts (2013 and 2015).

That leaves, what, 10 players on the roster (with Duncan gone and not counting Pau); there are incomplete roster charges when you go below 12.

^^^nevermind. Not sure if they can shave $5.6m any other way than losing Duncan. I'd have to do more math...not worth it.

Yeah all signs point to something is in the works.....We have held our hand way too long now. I hope we are doing so for a significantly better player we could ever get in FA.

But Boban would have been a good signing.

Maybe this sets the market for DMo's contract, except it would be nice to pay him on a front-loaded declining contract instead.
