The difference is that Rice was in the final year of his deal. The buyout was just so they didn't have to keep him on the roster. They still have to pay him and his salary will count against their salary cap this season.

If we cut Moochie, we would still have to pay him for the remainder of his contract - i.e. Matt Maloney. If we traded him to another team and they cut him, they would be stuck paying him for the remainder of his career.

    Jeff -
Close but let me augment. When a team releases a player (Matt Maloney or a hypothetical Moochie) that contract continues to hit the cap. But when there is a mutually agreed upon buyout (as was the case with Glen Rice), the buyout amount is what hits the salary cap and that amount (based upon %ages of the original contract) is amortized over the remaining life of the contract. Obviously for Rice/Utah, just this one year.

Mooch will be a baller this year, no need to trade him.

I agree! Moochie is going to be the MOST IMPROVED Rocket for 03/04.He knows that his number is up if he doesnt do it this season. JVG doesnt believe in old times sake like our former Coach.

I really feel that Moochie will improve drastically in a new system, also. The gaurd-dominate offence that we have ran last year was not designed to fit his talents. He will be better in an offence where its inside-out, which will allow him to move without the ball, instead of dribbling it to death waiting for others to actually move. Teams basically double teamed Francis last year, which would leave someone open. With Moochie in the game, they didn't do this, and therefore there was no one open to pass to most of the time.

Isn't it amazing that the more things change in the NBA, the more they come they come back to the basic inside-outside game with a point gaurd that actually passes?
