Rox is a perennial bad team as long as Morey is the GM

Well, I guess I am used to see the Rox from the 1993-1995 championship years. At least during these years, you see a chance every year, and the building block is Dream who is a top draft pick.

Even during the Tmac-Yao years, you see a chance in 2007 when Rox lost to the Jazz 3-4 in the 1st round 7-game series. If Rox could win, there is really a chance to go to the NBA final and beat the Cavaliers. Again, the building block Yao is a top draft pick, and Tmac is from trade.

Now, you know there is no chance. The team is just awfully structured.

The lesson is, if you can draft high and grab a top player, you have your chance. If you can't draft, the hope is slim.

Nobody is going to trade you their top gun. Harden, as good as he is, has weakness, and that's why he is traded.

You've been here for 14 years and I've never noticed you.

This thread explains why that's the case.

Perennial mediocre team, mediocre means middle of the pack, not good.

Without the draft, it can not achieve greatness, and it is boring.

Let me repeat, it is a boring team with no hope.

When the team is bad, at least fans can hope for a great draft pick.

Yawn..... Stop living in the past. If you think this was frustrating than trying being a Rockets fan in the mid to late 80s. A dynasty broken up due to injuries and crack/cocaine and The Dream wasn't exactly the man everyone thinks of today.

While that may be your opinion, this is not what your OP and thread title say.

Morey is always star-chasing, and thats where we got screwed. Last couple of offseasons, went all in on Melo/Bosh etc missing out on guys like Lowry who couldve solved our pg problem for good. Then went all in on Durant(knowing we didnt have much of a shot to get him) and then Horford, missing out on decent role players that we desperately need. He needs to re-evaluate his strategy. Stars cant win you a ring by themselves (except for Lebron), you need to have a complete team with multiple playmakers/ballhanders/shooters. I hope he finally learned his lesson here. Time to stop star-chasing and start building a team.

But not perennial bad per your OP? Just to be clear.

And what does that guarantee you?

Three out of fifteen Western Conference teams have made the WCF in the last two years. Rockets were one of them. So there you are, wrong.

And how many teams made the WCF in the 18 years between the Rockets last two trips there?

You folks will complain either way. We become a perennial 1-2 round playoff team like ATL and you folks will complain we accept our situation.

The top teams have the top talent, simple as that.

How did Cleveland, Golden State, OKC, and Toronto get most of their top talent?

About 12 different teams made the WCF since 2000.

Trying to build through FA is a risky bet, and when you combine that with an org that refuses to overpay (Except for Brewer) - you are not going to get many of those important Free Agents that make your team better.

Summer of 2016 - the Year of the Can Kicking extravaganza!

Exactly, everyone kept trying to figure out what the difference was between the Rockets in 2014 and 2015. DMo played the entire season in 2014, often without Howard. Howard due to his recovery from back surgery accepted his limited roll as a defensive stopper and offensive re-bounder.
2015: DMo didn't play much and Howard went back to being unhappy about playing second fiddle to Harden.
In the 2014 playoffs we didn't have DMo and he wasn't healthy for the 2015 season. Bad luck!

As for draft picks, we pick in the mid-teens, your not going to get All-Star talent level players consistently.

The Rockets could beat any team in the league on any given night the last few seasons. The only issue teams have with the Warriors is that the officials do not allow anyone other than the Cavs to play physical with them and the officials also don't call fouls on the Warriors big men except when they play the Cavs.

    1. The Rockets have actually ranged from mediocre to very good the entire time Morey has been the GM. They have never been outright bad. Even last season, which ranks as the most disappointing I can remember, they were a mediocre team, not a bad team.

    2. Morey is actually an amazing drafter. He simply hasn't had any high lottery picks due to Les's mandate that the Rockets always remain competitive. I dare you to name more than 2 teams in the league that draft better than the Rockets for where they are drafting.

    3. Every good GM tries not to overpay for free agents. Does that not go without saying?

Regardless, it seems to me your issue is with the owner, not the GM. Because no matter who the GM is, Les will continue to insist on "being competitive" so you will never rebuild through the draft. And recently a poster showed that only two championship teams in the past couple decades gained their stars through free agency. And they were Miami and Los Angeles. I love the city of Houston, but let's not fool ourselves into believing this is an attractive destination on the level of those cities.

I understand your frustration and I've even considered it may be time to promote Daryl to President and hire a new GM with a better mind for basketball, but you're just wrong in your critique of Daryl.

The point is we're completely neglecting the former. We're never gonna build a perennial contender with that approach.

And you won't be stuck with those same overpaid FAs when your stuck being a perennially 1st or 2nd round exit team.

Morey has said repeatedly he is trying to build a contender, not the ATL Hawks.

So you wouldn't complain being stuck with some overpaid FA's who barely move the needle?

No we aren't. DMo got injured and cost himself a max contract. TJones also never produced after his baffling array of injuries and cost himself too.

From a talent evaluation perspective I see a lot of ex-Rockets players in this last season's playoffs.
