I have a playstation 1 that is about 5 years old. I wanted to buy a basketball game for it, but I decided I shouldnt waste any more money on that piece of ****. So...... I want to buy one of those three game systems I mentioned. Gamecube , PS 2 , Xbox.

Here are some questions I have though ?

    1. Which has the best, and is the best for sports games ? (mainly football and basketball)

    2. Which has the DVD system?

    3. Which is most reliable not to breakdown.

    4. What are the prices for Playstation 2 and Xbox, and are they expected to go down anytime between now and December ?

    Thats it, thanks.

Picking a console depends on what type of games you play. If sports are what you play, then I'd assume that the XBOX will be the best pick. Both it and the PS2 have pretty much the same amount of sports games, IIRC, but the XBOX has more power so the games look better on it.

Both the XBOX and PS2 have DVD stuff, but you have to buy the kit for the XBOX to play DVD's while you can just stick it into a PS2 and watch it.

I couldn't really tell you much about the reliabilty. I have a PS2 and it hasn't given me any problems, but I've heard others have problems with it. I think I also have heard some for the XBOX as well though.

I can't remember the prices for the XBOX and PS2. If I had to guess, I'd say about $150. I can't remember if they had a recent drop or not. Not sure if they will go down anytime soon.

I don't know much about the Gamecube. It seems like an ok system, especially at $99, but I think the PS2 and XBOX beat it when it comes to sports games.

BTW, I'm into sports as well as RPGs and strategy so I got a PS2. (that's why I said XBOX for just sports games, though they got some nice action games as well.)

I haven't been able to keep up with the console war so I don't know how accurate this is.

If you're interested in sports games, and, basketball games specifically, do not get a gamecube. It is severely lacking in sports games. PS2 and X-box both have plusses and minuses, but both have quality sports titles.

X-box and PS2 can both play dvds. You need to buy the remote for the x-box to activate the dvd function, but it is by most all reports better than the PS2 as a dvd player.

    All are pretty reliable.

Not likely the x-box or the PS2 go down in price.

In general terms, X-box has better graphics, PS2 has a larger library, Gamecube has the exclusive Nintendo games. Only you can decide which is best for you.

    1. i got xbox. xbox has better graphics.

    2. both have dvd system. you gotta buy a 30 dollar remote and receiver thing for the xbox in order to play dvds tho.

    3. don't worry about that. shouldn't break down unless you literally play all day or you get a defect.

    4. retail prices for xbox is like 150. probably same for ps2. but maybe you can find a good deal for xbox or ps2 on ebay.

gamecube is the worst for sports games.

    1. I would say xbox because you don't need memory cards, Franchise modes in sports games eat up a TON of space on a memory card for a ps2. Xbox also has better graphics. However, w/ PS2 you can play madden online, xbox madden you can't play online. If that is a deal breaker and you have to be able to play madden online, get ps2.

GC is terrible for sports; many developers, like Sega sports, won't even make sports games for GC anymore.

    2. Both xbox and ps2, xbox you have to buy a remote control to use the DVD player though.

    3. Xbox: sometimes you get more bugs and crashes because of the internal hard drive; however, PS2's are notorious for being made like sh-t and breaking down a lot. Mine has never broken but I know a lot of people who are on their second one.

    4. I think it's around 150 though I think w/xbox you get a "bundle" and get 1-2 games with it. GC is now 99 I think. There may be a drop, but don't count on it.

The really PS2 broken down because I think people use it to watch movies on it also. I wouldn't advised you buy it to watch DVD since it isn't a good idea. I have PS2 and there are more games for it.

    Hmm. Tough questions.

You have a PS1, so those games will work on PS2 systems, if that matters to you.

The memory card thing is an issue; XBOX doesn't need them. On the other hand, a good 1000 block card can last you a long time.

GC has all the EA sports games, Blitz games and others. So I wouldn't say they are severely lacking. They don't have ESPN games, which doesn't matter as much for football but could effect your decision for basketball. ANd GC sports games work fine: in fact, it didn't have a problem transferring NCAA players into Madden, like the XBOX version did.

GC sports games also tend to look better than the PS2 versions. XBOX has the best graphics generally.

EA sports games this year are not online capable for XBOX. They are for PS2.

Standard retail for XBOX/PS2 is 179.99. No word on any price drops right now.

Reliability? PS2 (especially the older systems) had the most problems, followed by XBOX then GC.

I think that's about everything. As far as other games go, I think that if you have a good PC, the PS2 and GC have a better quality library.

i didn't know about this no espn games for gamecube thing. if you're into sports games that's a huge blow because i think the 2k series for basketball is the best. i like the gamecube alot especially at that price but if you're only going to have one system the x-box or ps-2 probably has more to offer.

my personal fave is the x-box but if you've got a bunch of ps-1 games you can still play em on ps-2 which would allow you to trade in that old thing for more games.

I just sold my GC, in large part because the ESPN Basketball will not be sold for it. I'm in the process of getting an XBox. And another reason I am switching is because I played Halo for the first time a couple of months ago.

For you PS2 might not be a bad choice either, since you can still play your old games. But I think for best quality and a decent game selection the Xbox is best.

    Ouch.

    Bye bye Nintendo.

Just for your info, dunno if this will decide your system, but I went to EBgames last week and they have a deal, where u can trade in your PSone or a Dreamcast with any seven games, u get the Gamecube for $50. Im probably going to do the trade in this week.

I myself already have an XBox since it came out. If your are really into sports games, go for the XBox. Like mentioned above, the hard drive is a big help for those Franchise freaks. 1/2 the time, the game is better on Xbox and most of them are online enabled.

A lot of developers are dropping support for the cube; the only games that sell on it are Nintendo franchises.

It is not us "Developers" that are dropping support for the gamecube.

It is the publishers that are unwilling to pay for any titles on the game cube.

I love the cube....but the titles are sorely lacking...

However, Mario Cart is just around the corner.

Oh, and I have all 3 systems...and use them all......actually the Play 2 has been idle for a while now.

I am in the same boat, my son loves the cube and it has some good games (metroid prime, Soul calibur) but I like the Xbox for its sports titles. The PS2 does not get alot of use right now.

On a side note I as well as a few friends of mine have had occasional problems with the ps2 for reliability (disc read errors), while xbox and the cube I have never had one problem. Just my 2 cents.

    Thank you very much folks.

I think I am going to go with the X Box , it doesnt require memory cards, and the smaller amount of games doesnt matter much since I wont buy that many games. I only have 5 in total for my ps1.

By the way, what exactly does rpg mean. Iknow it means role play or whatever, but how is that different from regular action games?

Another question I have : When I get the Xbox, I want to get a basketball game. Which is the best 5 on 5 basketball game out there? I'd like one where you can sign and trade players , and simulate seasons .

    Thanks again
